The Visit, opening through Universal Pictures on September 11, 2015, “focuses on a brother and sister who are sent to their grandparents’ remote Pennsylvania farm for a week long trip. Once the children discover that the elderly couple is involved in something deeply disturbing, they see their chances of getting back home are growing smaller every day.“

I'm curious to know what the found footage/regular movie ratio is, because I don't know how I feel about M. Night Shyamalan dabbling in found footage.

I do like the marketing campaign:

Those posters<3.

I didn't even know this existed until I saw the trailer for it when I went to see Unfriended the night before last. It actually looks decent but i'm sure a lot of people will skip it because it's a Shyamalan film.

Well, I was going to quote your post, Firefly, but those damn GIFs in your signature spilled out over the posting buttons so I can't do it. In that case, I'll just say no thanks and I am one of those that will skip this not just for it being one his movies but nothing about this intrigues me regardless of who's behind the lens.

Ah. :P

I actually don't mind his films. I don't care for Lady In The Water but the rest of his are decent enough (and some are pretty great).

I am looking forward to this. I don't hate M. Night Shymalamalamalamadingdong like everyone else does. I thought Lady in the Water and The Village were both great films, and I found The Happening actually pretty entertaining. The only film of his that was truly, truly abysmal was The Last Airbender.

This film looks creepy, and I LOVE the posters for it. Plus it's from Blum House. You can't usually go wrong there.

I have a feeling someone on Etsy will make dishrags and stuff that look like those posters. I'd considering buying something like that IF I like the movie.

I like Kathryn Hahn a lot, so I'm happy to see her doing a horror movie.

Signs and Unbreakable are my favorites, but I also like The Sixth Sense and The Village. I'm glad that he seems to be having a bit of a career recovery with this and Wayward Pines. Lady in the Water is the only one that I really strongly dislike. I have spent too much time thinking about why I don't like it, because I like magical realism. I think the problem is that it is a very personal film from someone with a personality I don't particularly like, and I'm also a bit obsessive over internal consistency.

I think he probably needs to make something with a small budget like this, since he made a habit of overspending on some of his films. I do like his directing style and the scores for his films, so I'll miss that.

Hurrah, no bigtime bashing here! (goo) Unbreakable was great, I used to love Signs, The Sixth Sense is good but slightl overrated, and I actually really like The Happening, flawed as it is. Shyamalan is definitely hit-or-miss but I'm not as picky about his films as some people are. He's one of those "cool to hate him" people I guess.

^ Agreed. It's not terrible, just bland. I like that tagline though.

eh like the posters but not impressed with the trailer. Liked some of his previous movies though and I think more of the hate is coming from the Avatar Last air bender fan base.

I'll probably be seeing this with Robby on Monday, or we might wait until Everest comes out so we can see them back-to-back (like we did with Sinister 2 and The Gift).

I saw this, and while I wouldn't say it's a return to form, I did kinda like it. It was a bit too slow early on, some of the humor clashed with the mood it was trying to go for, and unfortunately, I had the twist spoiled for me before I went in, which affected how I viewed the film. That said, I liked the characters, and when it did work (particularly towards the end), it was genuinely scary.

My full review is here.

Regarding M. Night Shyamalan being a director who it's "cool to hate", I kind of agree, though I do think he's made more than one genuinely bad movie. The Happening was laugh-out-loud hilarious for all the wrong reasons, The Last Airbender was by all accounts a disgrace to the source material, and the less said about After Earth, the better (though I think we all know who the real director was on that one). While I had mixed feelings about The Visit, I did like it overall, and between this and Wayward Pines, I hope that it's the beginning of a comeback for him.

I was pretty surprised by how satisfying this was. It's far from being the best Horror film of 2015 but it is definitely worth seeing and featured good performances, a few effective scares, and everything else that I was wanting from this. There's even a bit of blood thrown in, though it's far from gory (The Happening, a film of Shymalan's that I actually really like for the most part, is more violent than this is). This definitely has a more violent tone than some of his other films and it's nice that while there IS a big twist toward the end of the film, it's not something overly 'out there' that totally harms the rest of the film. In fact, the twist does what a twist is meant to do - it compliments the first 80-odd minutes of the film while pulling the rug out from under us at the same time. I was pretty surprised by it since I was expecting it to be a totally straight-forward movie with

I'm very happy that they decided to go a mostly realistic, human approach with this. After hearing some of people's theories about what was wrong with the grandparents (I heard people talk about

too many times to count), I was worried it would have a realistic first hour before going into weird territory in the third act. So big sigh of relief there!

While the rapping was really annoying (with a couple funny bits, I guess), I loved both of the kids. They were convincing and appropriately kiddish without being obnoxious or frustrating. They were also pretty intelligent which was what I was wanting since there's really nothing worse than a film that has two child/teen leads who are totally dumb and helpless.

More people died than I was expecting (
Spoiler: click to toggle
) which was nice even though much of the violence is offscreen. The found footage aspect was also given a real purpose which served the film, especially since it tied into a major storypoint of the family's. Nana and the grandfather were pretty fucking terrifying at times. The 'hide and seek' scene, the kitchen scene, the game scene, the bedroom scene with the sheet and the hand coming out from under...AAAH. (shock) I'm really happy that the annoying teen girls in the theater were separated and prevented from being obnoxious because there were plenty of opportunities for those brats to scream at the top of their lungs (more about that in the Worst Theater Experiences thread). :P

The ending was also very effective and pretty emotional as well. I'm sure some people would actually tear up a little bit. I didn't but it definitely made me feel...odd. (wary)

Definitely give this a watch!

6.5/10 quality, 8/10 entertainment.
