![]() Set in 1980 in a small Minnesota town where a man is arrested for sexually abusing his daughter. He admits his guilt despite having no memory of it. With the help of a psychologist, he relives the memories and implicates a police officer as his partner in crime. The man’s estranged son and other townspeople are also suddenly able to relive suppressed memories of horrific abuse. At the same time, the local news reports blame a Satanic cult that has been performing rituals of orgies, assault, killing animals and even babies, for years. The officers are alarmed when similar reports come in from all around the country—they believe they’ve uncovered a national and possibly supernatural conspiracy. Is the abuse real, or something else? I love the director's other movies, and the plot seems pretty nuts. I definitely want to see this one. |

Hmm, should this have been in the Upcoming Horror section until just now? It was released elsewhere but didn't get a U.S. release until February 5th, 2016. It's made roughly $17,000,000 in theaters in other countries. It's odd that this doesn't seem to be a bigger thing.

I know we talked about the release date getting pushed back at the last minute, but it must not have been in the thread for the actual movie. They started promotions before changing their mind at the last minute. It was weird. |

Ah! I was kind of thinking something was off about it since I haven't been able to find it anywhere. DVD, streaming, nothing. Now I know why so I know it's not randomly rare or something.

I watched this with Robby a few nights ago and we both loved it. It was nice that it was one of those 'based on true events' (in this case, the 'satanic panic' and events surrounding it in the 80s and 90s) that actually felt like it really was based on a true story. It is not one of those "this is based on a true story but here's some aliens blowing up the Eiffel tower" type things. Everything felt grounded and realistic (though the style of the film keeps it from feeling like a documentary or something, obviously). I loved the performances. Ethan Hawke, Devon Bostick, Emma Watson, Aaron Ashmore, David Thewlis, Dale Dickey (I loved her in Evidence so I was glad to see her in this) and everyone else did a good job here. This was far from Emma's best performance though. While she did good, some of her lines were weirdly delivered. But maybe I'm just nitpicking because I always expect greatness from her. Ethan was good (and attractive) here as well but his character was a bit too similar to several I've already seen him play. It would've been a lot more refreshing if he had been the 'bad cop' or the father in the family or even the priest. Devon Bostick was really, really cute in this and his character was interesting but not as developed as he should've been. In fact, the family wasn't explored nearly as much as I wish they had been. They were clearly strained and all had a love/hate relationship with each other but I wanted to know WHY they all felt that way about each other. Perhaps I just missed something. Still, that didn't hurt the movie for me though. There are some genuinely creepy scenes (people showing up at people's bedsides, one of the calls, the barn scene - yikes!) but nothing absolutely terrifying. Viewed under certain conditions, it'd definitely be pretty hair raising though. I was expecting a bit more jolts and violence from this but we still got a few pretty crazy bits. For the most part, it's driven by dialogue, characters, and mood and I had no problem with that. I usually feel impatient if a movie like this is close to two hours long but takes a while to REALLY get going but everything was put together so well that I was fine with the pacing and lack of big action setpieces. The ending was totally fitting. It pisses me off that critics and Horror fans are shitting all over it and it tells me that they know nothing about what the film is actually based on. Not one of the best of 2015/2016 but certainly not one of the worst. I'm sure I'll end up nominating at least one person for one of the actors/actresses categories in either the 2015 or 2016 awards. I think I'll count this as 2016. *Shrug* 7/10 quality, 6.5-7/10 entertainment. |

I'm glad that I didn't see it when I was really excited about it, because I think I would have been disappointed. It definitely wasn't bad enough to be suddenly ripped from the schedule like it was, but it wasn't amazing, like I was hoping. I agree that it will end up being a solid middle-of-the-pack movie by the end of the year. The creep bits were good. They set a nice mood. I know that this is one of the things that I've seen complaints about, but I liked that they went for more cliche scares and designs. It fit the story they were trying to tell. I don't think they were presented in a way that was cheesy, but the film needed to stick to those kinds of stories about Satanists to be more authentic to the time period. It made sense that Ethan Hawke's character's dreams would be based on stories that seem kind of corny now, because that's what they were talking about. I liked that one of them was adapted from The Amityville Horror, because it seemed like a reference point that the character would have, even though that doesn't generally involve Satanists. I was a little disappointed that the cast didn't meld together as well as I would have liked. I think I would pick David Thewlis' as my favorite performance. Lately, I have really liked Ethan Hawke, but I don't think this is the best of his recent roles. He was fucking fantastic in last year's Predestination, and the character was similar. I think the director might have adjusted too much from previous criticisms that the acting in his films was over-the-top and went with something a little too restrained here. I agree that this wasn't Emma Watson's best role. Sometimes I think that I might want her to be a better actress than she actually is. I think she did a better job at the end than in the rest of the movie. Spoiler: click to toggle Everyone playing her character's family was great, though.

I swear that my computer knows when I really want to get some gifs made. Or the universe, because Netflix didn't send me a copy, even though they claimed it would be a short wait. |
