When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.

Platinum Dunes may not but Blumhouse does because Jason Blum went to Flanagan to Improve on the original and the production company totally protected his vision and allowed for him to completely make the film he wanted to make. The first was made by a bunch of studio notes while this one is totally Flangan's creation and he has yet to disappoint.

I'll still wait for the reviews. Unless they're saying it's a substantial improvement over the first one (like The Purge: Anarchy was), I'm skipping this.

I have no doubt that there will be a significant improvement from the first. Like I am not hesitantly optimistic or open about seeing this, I'm highly eager to see this and have good expectations.

First looks terrible (and got even worse reviews), and Platinum Dunes is kinda notorious for not giving a fuck
If I paid as much attention to reviews as you do, I wouldn't have seen ninety percent of the films I've seen. (lol)

But yeah, I'm not expecting too much from this. I'm surprised there's an October release date. That's just over 115 days away and I don't think I've heard much about this.

To be fair, I never had any interest in Ouija in the first place. I thought it looked stupid and would probably suck. When the reviews echoed that sentiment, I skipped it. In contrast, I thought X-Men Apocalypse looked good. When the reviews disagreed... I saw it anyways and didn't care because I was interested. They mainly matter for movies I lack interest in or am borderline on.

Like, I probably will end up watching The Shallows because of the surprisingly good reviews as well. Not in theaters, but. And that was a movie I was 100% sure that I would NOT be seeing. So it goes both ways here

Puppy, just because there's no evidence she killed her aunt doesn't make her dating material.

The trailer is good. It looks like the plot will be interesting. I'm shocked that I have seen one on television already.

The retro posters are great. I much prefer these to the 80s style ones. And I think the child actress here (Lulu Wilson?) Is going to be great and really deliver the chills. I mean she snagged a role in Annabelle 2 after this so she has the creepy child thing down!

Disagreed. The scares are honestly silly. The little girl just speaking at the wall cause possessed? The slingshot scene? I honestly just find them laughable

And I say this as someone who genuinely expected the trailer to be good. Oculus had flaws, but the directing was amazing.

I agree about the talking bit but I love the slingshot bit, lol. Honestly no more laughable than a lot of the scares from older films that are widely praised.

Which ones? Lol. I'm sure there's some I'd agree on but

Ones that are basically the exact same sort of thing. Then there's stuff like the scares in the original House On Haunted Hill that (despite it being a good film) are ridiculously cheesy and lame but don't get many complaints.

I think cheesiness in older stuff is more forgiven due to FX issues and especially the extremely strict ratings system (the MPAA isn't good, but the Hayes Code is fucking HORRID) Endings especially got it bad due to the "bad guys must suffer comeuppance" rule to even receive an actual release (leading to silly scenarios and coincidences happening to make it passable, including a literal bolt of divine retribution at least once)

That said, haven't seen HOHH so j can't judge there.

Points to you for the Bad Seed mention. ;)

And I wasn't just talking about films that are THAT old. I was including some from the 80s and even 90s as well that had completely unoriginal, bland scares but are often totally forgiven for the nostalgia factor, it seems. Agreed about the code compared to the MPAA though. A lot of the scares I mentioned aren't just ones that involve effects. A lot are just people or sounds. And don't even get me started on the nonstop screaming and helplessness of the female characters (certainly something I do NOT miss about older films though some new films have that issue too).

Overall, I'd say un originality is this film's problem, not general cheesiness or being laughable.
