In 1965 Los Angeles, a widowed mother and her two daughters add a new stunt to bolster their séance scam business and unwittingly invite authentic evil into their home. When the youngest daughter is overtaken by the merciless spirit, this small family confronts unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.

The trailer needed different editing. No horror movie, except for the occasional slasher, looks too good in a trailer like that.

I got out of an advanced screening and found it to be another win for Flanagan. It was a solid horror film that felt perfect for the Halloween season that had the right amount of scares, fun, and drama. I loved Lulu Wilson in this and thought she played Doris really well.

I'm so surprised that this is soooo well received. I'm sure a lot of horror fans will hate it no matter what because horror fans are hard to please nowadays but the praise it's getting had me looking forward to it a bit more than before.

A sequel to a poorly-received teen horror flick based on a board game is randomly turning out to be one of the best horror films of the year.

More proof that 2016 has been fucking weird.

So I saw this last night, and while I don't even know if I'd put it in my top 5 horror films of 2016, that's more a statement about how much quality we've gotten this year (10 Cloverfield Lane, The Witch, Don't Breathe, Green Room, The Conjuring 2, The Neon Demon) than a knock on this film, because it was still really good. I loved the visual style of it and how committed they were to the '60s look of everything, I loved the main characters, and most importantly, I loved the scares. One scene of this film was more terrifying than the whole of the first film. Definitely recommended.

My full review is here.

Also, something I noticed: between this and Oculus, Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard have written two supernatural horror films that turn the "believer/skeptic" dynamic on their head. In Oculus, it's left open as a possibility, all the way through to the end, that the skeptic Tim may be right, and that the mirror is perfectly mundane and he and Kaylie are going mad. This film is more clear-cut -- Alice firmly believes that Doris is channeling her dead husband Roger's ghost while Paulina thinks it's something else. It turns out that Paulina is completely right, and furthermore, her suspicion stems from her knowledge of how her mother fakes the seances and readings she does.

I saw this a few days ago and I didn't like it. Like it was alright but I don't really see myself rewatching it anytime soon. I loved the 60's aesthetic, though. Did anyone else notice the random circle popping up in the corner during the movie or did the theater I went to just have a messed up screen?

I thought this was really good. The direction was great, which elevated the whole movie above the usual paranormal films. I love that the committed to the aesthetic. I like that they mostly took the approach of getting the best out of the atmosphere of films made in 2016 and 1971, instead of trying to really hide that the film was shot digitally. The jump scares were done well. I also liked the story. I like how the older sister was written.

I didn't love the third act, but I thought they did a really good job of keeping things tense. I do think it would have been better if they hadn't bothered tying the events in this film to the first one. Having the only connection be that the movies in this series have Ouija boards in them was enough for me. It created too many plot holes, and it isn't like the first movie was any good.
