![]() The film is based on what are said to be actual events about a family who visit the Grand Canyon and bring home more than a few t-shirts and refrigerator magnets, namely a supernatural force that feeds off their fears and takes over their lives. Edited by Vanessa, Feb 24 2016, 12:57 AM.

So, I haven't seen this yet, but checking the reviews... wow, this is getting absolutely ravaged. So far, there's thirteen critics in on Rotten Tomatoes, all negative. The RT audience score (37%), IMDb score (4.7), and Cinemascore (C) are ever-so-slightly better, but that's damning it with faint praise. Shame. I expected much better from Blumhouse and the maker of Wolf Creek, though the generic-as-hell trailer did little to give me hope. Might be good for hatewatching, though. It's not even good for hate watching like you could do with some syfy stuff. I really really didn't like this. Bad writing, annoyingly choppy editing, mixed acting, story lines being added and dropped like nothing left and right, anticlimactic, predictable, bland, and you just know that they ripped and shredded the script a million times before they shot this. My pick for worst theatrical release of 2016 so far. Like Visions, Curve, and The Veil were more deserving for a theatrical release than this. |

But it made 2 million today and is projected to make around 5 million over the weekend, which would make it a success since making 4 million this weekend was what the company wanted to generate a profit. Hopefully that means Greg McLean can make a good supernatural horror film next time because he really seems to want it tell more supernatural horror. |

Ehh, I never go by mainstream critics' reviews. Frankly, they have shit taste and very narrow minds 99% of the time, only praising big budget superhero flicks, arthouse dramas, and so on. I'll pass on paying attention to those. A lot of them probably haven't seen nearly as many TRULY godawful films as quite a few people on here have. That said, i'm really not surprised that this is getting bashed. I'm still looking forward to seeing it though. And I'm glad someone other than me said The Veil, Curve, and Visions deserved theatrical releases. I actually really enjoyed all three of those. |

No it really is a horrible film that deserves the extremely negative reviews from critics. It goes beyond just generic and turns into lazy, hastily thrown together, poorly conceived, and underwhelming as hell. It's not the worst movie ever made, but that does not make this any better just because of that fact. I enjoyed Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and The Gallows, but hated this. In fact I really wanted to walk out but figured I paid to see it and would finish it. Pissed I wasted my money nonetheless. |

It's badly written; dialogue is awkward and the cast doesn't sell it, the film drops and starts storylines and characters like nothing leaving the film without closure. Any attempt to develop it's characters falls flat because of this. The villains don't make any impact on the audience whatsoever and come across as cheap and silly when they show up. Feels incredibly uneventful, dull, and boring because it executes its horror sequences horribly and has no dread, humor, suspense, or atmosphere. Has no personality or spark to it, feels like the cast and crew phoned it in, and is just bland as all hell. |

I know I do. It's just really generic and has a structure that's too similar to the structures of dozens upon dozens of very similar films. That's the main issue I have with it. The film itself isn't bad. It just doesn't take many risks with the material or do anything fresh with the story. Of course, it does set itself from a lot of other similar movies by having the supernatural stuff going on cause the family's existing problems to become much worse than they were before. The four in the family all have different conflicts going on and I loved that these issues bounced off of each other and put as much strain on the family as the demonic shit did. The son is autistic, the daughter has a rather obsessive eating disorder, the father had an affair but is trying to make up for what he did, the mother is a recovering alcoholic, etc. I almost wish we had a fifth person in the family just to see what their issue would be, lol. They did a surprisingly good job of handling these things too. Again - these issues and even the ways they were handled isn't anything particularly new but they still did a really good job with it all and the scenes involving these issues and things that existed before the family even came across the demon rocks were my favorites, easily. I loved the ending for some odd reason. The very last scene is a little too cheesy and felt kind of tacked on but I loved the fifteen minutes that came before it. I really liked the older woman and her granddaughter who eventually started helping the family. They had some cool moments and I wish they had been introduced sooner since they would've added a lot more entertainment value to the first 65 minutes, I'm sure. I also wish the other family shown in the beginning (boyfriend, mom, dad, etc) had been featured more too. I expected there to be a bigger subplot with the boyfriend and the daughter but nope. Maybe that's for the best since it would've been a bit clichéd. I really didn't like the dad's boss at all but his wife was another favorite character of mine (who also should've had at least one or two more big scenes). The scares were alright but I didn't jump a single time and I never felt creeped out. The story was effective, it was mostly entertaining, the performances were alright, and there were five or six characters I liked but they definitely missed the mark when it comes to actually SCARING the audience. This has some Poltergeisty stuff I liked but they didn't go too overboard with it. Some of the haunting aspects were handled SLIGHTLY differently from the usual demon/ghost infested house story but not differently enough to make this extremely memorable. It's good enough for one viewing at the very least but as it is, I still like The Boy, Green Room, The Witch, and three or four others I've seen in theaters this year a bit more. It's not bad though and I don't get why people are trashing it so much. Like I said, its biggest flaw is that it is EXTREMELY generic and has a lot of the usual tired paranormal flick clichés. 5-ish/10 quality, 6+/10 entertainment. |

Okay... I actually really liked this. I do not understand why everyone has hated it so much. It was actually a very well-written and acted film with some pretty damn good cinematography. All of the actors in the film did a very good job, and I cared for every single member of the family. They were very fucked up, to the point that this movie almost felt like Insidious meets American Beauty or something, but that made it feel more real. And all of the actors carried their roles very eloquently. I was particularly pleased with David Mazouz. I've worked with autistic children off and on since I was in high school, as well as dated a few guys who have mild Aspergers. Actors, even seasoned adult ones, always go fucking overboard when portraying someone autistic and end up trying to make them crazy idiot savant types, and it comes off almost offensive and fake... David actually played it very real. I do not think he's actually autistic, but he did a damn good job of it in the film. His performance rivals Max Burkholder in Parenthood, which I consider to pretty much be the Taj Mahal of actors playing autistic characters, as it was very real and not-at-all forced or offensive. I also love that the film used the family to deal with very real issues, from alcoholism, infidelity, family stress, and, with the teenage daughter, eating disorders. Good God, those scenes were disturbing. Sure, some people who don't know about mental illness and eating disorders may say "why didn't she try to hide it better by throwing up in the toilet blah blah," but the scenes of her hiding it in bowls under her bed are much more effective in showing real mental illness. This film presented a family that was easy to root for. They were very real, very believable, very dysfunctional, and very sympathetic. That was the strength of the film more than anything: its writer and its characters, and how those two things mesh together to create the drama this film centers on. The horror aspects of this film were not the best part, but that was to be expected. I didn't mind. It wasn't all that scary... But I was not watching the film to be scared. What this film had in major cliches, cheesy moments, and jump scares, it more than made up for with genuine acting, emotion, and a very good script. Like I said. Was it scary? No. Was it cliched? Of course. Was it the best film of the year? Not even by a long shot... But Greg McLean's directorial skills, all of the lead actors' acting skills, and an above-average character-centered script elevated it from typical supernatural horror territory. The only thing that made me actually laugh a little was when that Latina psychic said to her granddaughter "we need to hurry," and then you see them slowly, slowly, SLOWLY walking up the stairs with the family... We need to hurry, so let's go in slow motion. Really, really, though... Truly not a bad movie at all. Not scary, nor all that creative, but like I said, the acting and the writing more than made up for the lack of real scars and onslaught of cliches. I probably liked it more than most people, but I'm not hard on horror like most people seem to be now... But the horror isn't why I liked it. The realistic portrayals of autism, mental illness, and what not, are what caused me to really like it. I give it a 7/10. (Probably higher than everyone else, but fuck it.) |

Maybe we could have a decent debate on the film if you'd write an eloquent review about it and not just write small bashings of it.

I went into the details for why I hated it twice. It's not me just saying it sucks because it sucks. I had issues with the dull characters whose issues were poorly handled and dropped left and right, bad cheesy dialogue, bland atmosphere and plot, cheesy villains and horror sequences that were horribly executed, bland cinematography and direction that only had any spark in the first 5 minutes, flimsy acting from the cast, poor pacing, an unforgivable sense of deja vu of a million of better films, and clunky editing and transitions from scene to scene. I'm sorry but I will never see this as anything other then an awful movie. |
