Eurgh! That worries me. Good thing I always hold onto my receipts for a while. Chances are I'll just be buying a cheaper, used copy of this at some point anyway though. |

How was your DVD broken, Vanessa? Was it like cracked, or is it like the Catacombs DVD, where it plays the trailers on a loop, and there is no way to escape it to get to the menu, depending on what kind of DVD player you have? |

That's a bummer. :/ Is it physically broken? Lately I've encountered a few that only play on computers, they're manufactured on demand or something like that. |

The DVD is physically fine. It played a couple trailers before going to a black screen and refusing to show anything but a black screen. I ended up ripping the files with my computer and exchanging it for something else. |

The thing I liked most about this is the direction and editing. It smoothed over the less impressive parts of the script, and it highlighted the good bits. The direction had flair, and it really brought out the best gags and lines. It borrows a lot from Sam Raimi and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, but both of those are entertaining. Also, there are enough less impressive imitators of Raimi that doing it well is worth a good amount of praise. I liked the three leads. All three were cast really well. It manages to just barely avoid becoming a wish-fulfillment fantasy. The movie comes very close, but it is willing enough to poke at the protagonists' flaws to not be overbearing with it. The end wasn't great, but more than enough of the humor landed for it to be an entertaining watch. I like splatstick, and there were some nice gore gags. |

I kind of wonder if the Walmart "A Heavy Metal Apocalypse" copy of this movie is worth buying simply to have it, as who knows... It may become a collector's item of some kind someday! |

It is annoying that the entire case has 'Heavy Metal Apocalypse' on it instead of just having it on the slipcase and 'Deathgasm' on the actual case. That's what they did for A Christmas Horror Story after all and I actually really liked that (the slipcover had 'A Holiday Horror Story' with 'A Christmas Horror Story' on the actual case). I won't be getting this from WalMart, lol |

I'm going to likely get the real Deathgasm version on DVD, but... Who knows. This film has already garnered a pretty good following. In thirty years, it may have a huge cult classic status, and that Walmart copy may be a rare collector's item. Who knows. Or maybe I just like having things other people don't 'cause I'm a selfish whore. |

Watched this today. I had such high hopes for this, I really did... Everyone, both audiences and critics alike, have been praising the shit out of this movie, talking about how it's one of the best horror-comedies in years... But a lot of the humor (and the horror) falls completely flat. I was so disappointed by this movie. I did not like any of the characters. The character of Zakk feels like a metalhead version of a 1999 Heath Ledger wannabe. Brodie is whiny and annoying, and completely guilty of everything bad that happens in the film. Melina has little to no depth. Dion and Giles were one-note nerd jokes. Etc. No one had any depth. I did not care for anyone in the entire film. The jokes were mostly unfunny. I chuckled a few times, but not nearly as much as I would have expected from a horror-comedy called DEATHGASM. The line about "her tongue wasn't meant for Latin" made me chuckle... But the only scene that really made me LAUGH was the scene where Spoiler: click to toggle The metal backdrop could've been amazing, but much like the characters, everything felt very superficial and one-note. The metalheads were all tired cliches of what metalheads are, and that may have been the point for the sake of humor, but it did not quite work. I have seen a lot of people comparing this to Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse and talking about how much better this one is... I don't get it. I actually laughed a lot during Scouts Guide, AND I actually quite cared for every main character. I didn't care for anyone here. This film was trying so hard to be like a metalhead version of Dead & Breakfast or Evil Dead II, but it falls short of both of those hilarious horror-comedies, sadly. If this film has any real saving grace, it's the gore and the practical effects. The gore is fucking AMAZING and some of the best of 2015, and the makeup effects for the possessed townspeople was fantastic. With that said, the actual MAIN demon makeup looked like something out of early Buffy the Vampire Slayer... Which really only works for Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I really wanted to love this movie. I really did. I feel bad for being so disappointed in it, but I feel like I'm missing something. What did everyone else see in this movie that was so amazing that went so far over my head? I'm normally INCREDIBLY easy on horror films, particularly horror-comedies (I love Piranha DD, for shit's sake), but... I just didn't love this movie. I was entertained. Mildly... So I won't totally fail it... But I can't say I will be giving it any real praise other than for its effects (except for the 1997 Buffy demon, of course). Grade: C-/C Sorry to anyone who loves this film. I know I kind of slaughtered it here. At least I passed it. |
