![]() "Glass Eye Pix filmmaker Mickey Keating is prepping a new horror flick entitled Carnage Park, and right now we have the early details and sales artwork for you! To be produced by Eric B. Fleischman and Sean Tabibian and their Diablo Entertainment, Keating tells Shock, “I want Carnage Park to be an unflinching, pulpy homage to the gritty crime films of the 1970’s, like Peckinpah’s The Getaway, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia, and Campanile’s Hitch Hike and also survivalist films like Deliverance, Escape 2000, The Running Man, and of course The Most Dangerous Game.” The film is “set in the late 1970s and tells the story of a bank heist gone awry,” Keating explains. “Two low-level crooks take a hostage and drive deep into the desert, where they end up in Carnage Park, an isolated stretch of land occupied by a psychotic ex-soldier who hunts people with a high powered sniper rifle. It’s set almost entirely over the course of one brutal day.” The film is expected to shoot this summer." http://www.dreadcentral.com/news/88565/efm-2015-mickey-keating-heads-carnage-park/ Edited by Vanessa, Jan 14 2016, 10:51 PM.

Yeah the opening is very Reservoir Dogs but you could tell that they were lovingly influenced by it and some other films since it was so well done and Keating always talks about his influences. That's the thing with the director he is really talented but seems to focus heavily on homaging others instead of really making his own stuff, but I am such a fan of his stuff that I don't mind. I really did like practically everything about this (even the darkly lit climax) and wouldn't say it was a waste at all. I'm glad I spent my money on it! |

So I really enjoyed this but it definitely wasn't quite as fantastic as it should've been. Like Darling, which was also good but not great, it just BARELY misses that mark. It's good - it's very good - and it definitely does a good job with the references and walking the fine line between being a ripoff and being a solid homage, but there's just something missing. I think that 'something' might be more than just one character to really root for (but thank GOD that one character is the lead who is in literally every single scene ). We get a very strong, likeable, and mostly realistic lead and a pretty creepy, well written villain who never feels super human but isn't exactly easy to take down either. Everyone else? They're all totally forgettable and they pass in and out of the story, sometimes without making a real impact (I was disappointed that Larry Fessenden's character was SO SMALL since I love him and they could've done something interesting there). The half dead girl could've given us a couple of interesting bits as well if she'd been given more. It's an 80 minute film so they could've at least had some of the random 1/2 scene characters tag along with our lead for a few minutes at least. The violence is pretty meanspirited in this and the effects were never bad. I loved that some scenes were VERY gory (I'm talking Wolf Creek 2 gory in one scene in particular) while other scenes left things up to the imagination. The ending was a bit of a letdown. The final shot is rather haunting and effective and one of my new favorite final shots for some reason but the fifteen minutes leading up to those last thirty seconds seemed to go on forever. The climax had a great concept and was mostly well executed but it clashed with the first hour of the film and they didn't make that location as frightening as it should've been. I didn't DISLIKE the ending but it was a bit sluggish sometimes and it was a bit too darkly lit. Realistic, sure. But not the best it could've been. Overall, I was satisfied but not blown away. It seems Keating is one of those "almost-but-not-quite brilliant and his films just barely miss being fantastic" people. Hopefully he gets it 100% next right. As it is, I like his work that I've seen so far so I have faith that he has a masterpiece up his sleeve somewhere. This, Pod, and Darling just weren't it. ![]() 5.5-6/10 quality, 6-ish/10 entertainment. |

It is coming out on DVD and blu-ray on November 1st. I have been wanting to get it from Netflix, so I'm excited. I am in denial and thinking that Netflix would actually send it when I put it at the top of my list. |
