Me too since I've seen a lot of people talking about it elsewhere. I might watch it soon. |

So I didn't love it AS much as I hoped I would and I still prefer a few of Scorsese's other films (Goodfellas, Casino, The Departed<3) but it was still really good. The first third of the movie set things up really well and I liked that unlike a lot of 90s thrillers, it didn't make things overly complicated to the point of being 100% unrealistic and silly. It was exaggerated at times but still felt realistic in a lot of ways. The stalking stuff was really well done here, handled better here than in many other movies like this that I've seen. I love the shot of Max watching them with the fireworks going off in the background (and I wish that the 4th of July had been spotlighted at least a little more here - they mentioned it a few times, there was the fireworks scene, etc so I figured that the climax would take place on/around the 4th with some kind of I Know What You Did Last Summer-esque chase near a parade or something). That's a small complaint though. A bigger one is that from around 45 minutes in until around the 80 minute mark, it dragged quite a bit and got a bit too chatty. As is the case with a lot of other movies like this, it was just a little too long. In my opinion, it could've been 1 hour 50 minutes instead of 2 hours 9 minutes and it would've still been just as effective. The scene where Max was creeping on the weirdly willing daughter at the school was effective and had me on edge but that started to wear off because it went on too long. That scene didn't need to push ten minutes, much like the 'head bashing' scene in the (far inferior) Seed that started strong and disturbing but eventually became tedious. But thankfully the effects here were better than they were in Seed. I wish that the maid had a bit more to do. She was only in a couple scenes and then she popped up one more time randomly just to look suspicious in a few shots Spoiler: click to toggle The first onscreen death was surprisingly graphic, had a nice aftermath, and led to one of the DUMBEST decisions of the entire movie. WHY would you grab the piano wire and the gun and fall in the blood - contaminating a crime scene and making yourself look like a psychopath when you were already under suspicion?! That character - who was my second favorite (the wife played by Jessica Lange is my number one) - was VERY intelligent throughout the rest of the movie so that part really stuck out to me in the worst way. The villain was pretty terrifying and the performance made me appreciate Robert DeNiro even more (didn't think that was possible). Sleazy but with a touch of class, creepy, intimidating, and brutal (and not afraid to wear women's clothing, lol) he was exactly what I was hoping the stalker-killer in this would be. The climax was AWESOME and went on for just the right amount of time, managing to be mean, violent, disturbing at times (the sexual assault stuff - eek!). The boat setting was appropriately claustrophobic and the storm and waves added a nice extra layer of danger to it. The uneven pacing, occasional stupid decisions from usually smart characters, and the fact that the daughter was more of an idiot who got herself into trouble by pulling the 'rebellious, love struck teen' crap than a sympathetic victim keep this from being a MASTERPIECE, but it's still pretty damn good. (thumbsup)\ 7/10 quality 7.5/10 entertainment. |
