So despite the fact that it didn't really focus much on the aspect of the Mayans that I was expecting (scientific achievements, construction, and so on), I thought this was pretty fantastic. It was bloodier, more action packed, and more disturbing than I was expecting it to be. Even with the R Rating, I figured it'd just be typical 'war type violence' and bow-and-arrow deaths or whatever, but nope. We get snake bites, poisonings, beatings, burnings, stabbings, hearts ripped out, decapitations, throat slits, and more. It's a VERY brutal movie but I guess I shouldn't be too surprised that it was violent given the fact that it was from the director of The Passion Of The Christ! ![]() I really liked the characters and performances as well as the fact that they didn't go the cheap Hollywood route of having the characters randomly speaking English (which would've killed any sense of realism, honestly). In many ways, this is a VERY simple survival/revenge film - a village is attacked, men are separated from their families, and one man goes on a really violent journey to find his wife and son before their attackers reach them again. That's as complicated as it gets so this is honestly really easy to follow, but it still has some really nice layers and themes. I love that during the revenge portion, it wasn't just people killing people - nature was striking back as well. Despite being close to two and a half hours long, this went by really quickly. It also looked GORGEOUS. I do wish they had focused more on the civilization but really, that's not too huge of an issue since this was meant to be from the point of view of a village in the jungle, lol. For the most part, I loved it. Highly recommended. ![]() 7/10 quality, 8/10 entertainment. |
