Potters Bluff, Rhode Island. may seem to be a sleepy little town. At least for the casual visitor and the local sheriff, Daniel Gillis. However, all of a sudden, there are a lot of strange murders where strangers or people passing through are killed by mobs of townspeople. Only Sheriff Gillis has no clue to what's going on. Fortunately, the town has an excellent undertaker, William G. Dobbs, who is happy to take care of this sudden death-wave which is good for his business. Gillis soon discovers clues that lead to many of the local inhabitants involved in the killings, including his own wife Janet.

We should be ashamed of ourselves for not having a thread for this awesome movie already (unless we actually do and it was just 'hiding' when I used the Search feature).

I showed this to Robby the other night and he thought it was decent. I still love it though (it's definitely one of my ten favorites of the year it was released). This is one of the creepier films of that year too. It has that same cold, wet, dark 'island feel' that The Fog has and - dare I say it - I think this is actually more cold and atmospheric than The Fog (which is still amazing, don't get me wrong). Pretty much my only complaints are that the opening scene went on a couple minutes too long (we really didn't need a ten minute scene like that since it ended up being such a 'small deal' in the grand scheme of things), the family scene ended too abruptly and

, and the twist ending (

) had a genuinely shocking execution but it was the sort of twist that isn't all THAT hard to figure out. (wary)

Almost everything else? Near perfect. This has a pretty slow pace but it really works because of how damn suspenseful and eerie it is. This had a great use of darkness, shadows, colors, etc. and the whole thing felt deliciously gloomy. The bodycount is also double digits and there are some VERY gnarly kills here. Needles to eyes, throat slashings, stabbings, burnings, and some other attacks. The 'body preparation' scene was also really well done and pretty fascinating to watch.

The characters aren't all that great. Only a handful - the blonde woman, the dark haired woman, Dan, Dan's wife, and Dobbs - really stuck out to me. Many of the others - even Robert Englund's character - sort of blended together BUT I don't really mind all that much since it fits into the 'faceless crowd' aspect of this. The killer(s) are really creepy, cold, and robotic at times. I also loved the weird obsession with cameras, bright lights, etc. in the death scenes that really added to them and made things...stranger somehow. :P

So yeah. Watch this. Now. I love it to death and I hope you guys will too<3.

7+/10 quality, 8/10 entertainment.

Just bought the novelization for only three bucks. I'm pretty giddy about that.

I've long been a fan of this overlooked little gem. It's certainly deserving of much more attention than it gets.

Incidentally, I have a PDF copy of the original screenplay if anyone's interested.

Since I'm going to be watching this again and reading the novel before the end of this month, now would be a good time to send it my way if you want. I'll probably read it in between the movie and the novelization. (goo) Glad to see another fan of this by the way. It almost seems like one of those movies that's a childhood favorite of some that they 'forget' about unless it's brought up in a conversation or something. That sort of happened to this with me anyway. I watched it years ago and it just sat on my shelf for ages without me thinking about it until I decided to show it to my boyfriend some months back.

I saw it for the first time back in the early '90s. Had never heard of it, saw it sitting on a video shelf, saw the name "Lisa Blount" in the credits (I recognized her name from Carpenter's Prince of Darkness and a few other flicks) and that's what made me want to check it out. And I'm glad I did. As you say, it's one of those flicks that people forget about. But those who have seen it, if you mention it they almost always say something along the lines of "Yeah, I saw that. Great little flick."

The script -- shoot me your email addie and I'll send it on.
