I'll be coming back to talk about the film itself later. I wanted to review the special features first, while they were still kind of fresh in my mind. These are on the Criterion release. It includes an interview with the director from when he was inducted into the Directors Guild of Japan and an interview with a film critic. It is a different interview than the one included with Onibaba, and it isn't as good. The interview with the director does not talk about this movie at all. I do think it works okay because it's easy to figure out how the themes they are discussing in relation to his other films relate to this one. I'm guessing Criterion doesn't have any plans to release Children of Hiroshima or Story of a Beloved Wife, so it was included with this. It did have a bit too much emphasis on his most recent film, but I thought most of the earlier material was interesting. I think I enjoyed the critic interview a little bit more. It was a little more historical than these usually are, but they did have a lot of information to cover. It did seem like they cut off at a strange point. It seemed like he was about to start discussing another topic instead of ending. Overall, including the text materials, it is a little more focused on the folktales and history of the film than stylistic elements. This isn't that relevant to most people, but I did have an unusual amount of problems making a subtitle track for this. |

I really loved this. It's definitely underrated in relation to the other Japanese New Wave horror films. The acting is one of the things I enjoyed the most. The familiar faces were of course good, but I really enjoyed Nakamura Kichiemon II. I think he's better known for his work in kabuki than film, but it makes sense since he's amazing at it. The cinematography is really striking. The special effects and editing are great. I like the way Shindo can weave social commentary into his films without it becoming overwhelming. It also adds complexity to the film's love story. It's more emotionally complicated than the average rape-revenge film. |
