![]() Five intertwining tales of terror unfold along an endless desert highway. On a desolate stretch of road, weary travelers — two men on the run from their past, a band on their way to the next gig, a man struggling to get home, a brother in search of his long-lost sister and a family on vacation — are forced to confront their worst fears and darkest secrets in these interwoven tales of terror and remorse on the open road. I was confused too. Vanessa brought up the thing about them being in purgatory when we talked today, and I am going with that explanation. It is a convenient explanation for all confusing movies. |

This is probably one of my favorite horror anthologies. I absolutely loved it and thought even the weakest story (Jail Break) was still pretty good. Good acting, great look and Twilight Zone-esque feel, cool stories, and it comes in a great little package. Like to me this was horror anthology greatness and I don't see any other anthology this year coming close to this if Holidays and Fun Size Horror Volume 2 are examples for the other 2016 horror anthologies.

I'm glad that I waited to review this until after I made gifs, because it made me like the movie more. I'm going from best to worst. The Accident: This was a great segment. I was on edge the whole time. It was really atmospheric and creepy. Mather Zickel seems to mostly be in comedies, but I'd like to see him in another horror film. I feel like his performance made it easy to fill in the blanks about who his character is without the movie being able to spend much time on him. It is also the one that fits with the others the best. Siren: This kind of story is always a good one. I thought they did a good job of thinking of slightly different ways for the creepy people to be creepy. I liked the set design, too. I was a nice mix of styles that kept it from being too easily identifiable. I'm glad that Roxanne Benjamin was added to xx after seeing this. The Way Out: I loved the design of the creatures. I like the organic look that they have, and I really loved how they breathed. An interesting creature goes a long way. It shows up in other segments, but I like that they had Carnival of Souls playing. I appreciate movies mixing up their public domain movie references. Jailbreak: This is where the movie started to decline in quality. I agree that this one felt longer than it was. It felt longer than it should have, but I was interested enough in the story to want to know how it ended. I did like the way it connected to The Accident, though. The Way In: This was an easy pick for my least favorite. The story wasn't as weird as the other ones, which I think really hurt it. I kept waiting for something weirder to happen. The plot was too similar to something from an ordinary thriller. I like that this anthology wasn't dependent on every story having a twist, but I think this segment needed one. |

I don't have Amazon Prime so I'm going to need to just buy a DVD copy. |

Hmm Not that great of a horror anthology, IMO Let's break it down though: The Way Out - Interesting, but not really a great opening story for the movie. Siren - Love the concept and how things played out. Spoiler: click to toggle The Accident - I find this one to be my favorite, by far. Tense, kind of funny, makes you squirm, and doesn't let up. Jailbreak - Perhaps this may be my second favorite, though Siren may hold that title. I love the conceit that Spoiler: click to toggle The Way In - Spoiler: click to toggle The Accident > Siren ≥ Jailbreak > The Way In > The Way Out I did like the humor throughout, but I think this movie could definitely benefit from having a wraparound story, or a framing story rather, as most anthology films that don't have one could. To understand what I mean, check out old Amicus films, like Tales from the Crypt and Asylum, or even the horror classic, Dead of Night. They utilize the framing story in a great, effective way. I know it would change the ending a bit for Southbound, but, still, the bumping of one character into another character to change stories isn't really my cup of tea. The only film I can think of right now that worked like that is Richard Linklater's Slacker, and that's not a horror movie. Not by a long shot. Also, I love it that people are kind of up in arms about what this movie means. Each story is set in Hell. What else is there to understand?

Oh it's a bummer you didn't love it because I just love this one. The fact that the stories just segway into each other actually makes me love it more than the usual anthology framing device because it made it have a cohesive feel. Like the stories all felt like they were in the same world. Also I think I may be the only person here to love The Way Out. I actually thought it was really emotional! |
