So I hadn't watched this since like...2008 before showing it to Robby the other night. When I first saw it, I thought it was pretty good - just really slow moving and seemed to bounce around way too much in its story. This time I actually really appreciated those things. I guess the first time I saw it, I was expecting a totally crazy war flick with nonstop action. This time I knew better. I loved how offensive and over-the-top a lot of the dialogue is. I would say that it's an extremely quotable movie but I'm sure if I said half of what was said in this movie, especially nowadays, I'd be slapped and given some sort of hateful label. (trollface) I fucking LOVED R Lee Ermey in this. His character is pretty much the military version of Sheriff Hoyt from Texas Chainsaw Massacre - but even angrier, lol. The deaths in this are pretty shocking and violent. Lots of graphic gunshot deaths. One scene where characters are used as bait to trap the other soldiers is pretty effective and then of course there's the bathroom scene. Vincent D'Onofrio was both sympathetic and disturbing in his role as Leonard Lawrence. Animal Mother was damn fine but sheesh, he was SUCH a dick! Joker was really likeable and adorable. He was probably the best choice for the lead of the film. I liked Cowboy too but he was just sort of 'there' for a long while until the shit hit the fan. Eightball was another favorite of mine (but that might just be because I really like Dorian Harewood). Some of the others were decent but many of them were forgettable. The settings were great, the pacing wasn't all that slow at all, the story was simple but blunt and effective, the reveal at the end Spoiler: click to toggle was brilliantly executed, and the prostitute's stuff was HILARIOUS. Overall, this is a pretty great movie. Sure, it's a *tad* overrated but I still love it for the most part. 7/10 quality, 8/10 entertainment. |
