![]() Inspired by the incredible events surrounding an attempt to reach the summit of the world's highest mountain, Everest documents the awe-inspiring journey of two different expeditions challenged beyond their limits by one of the fiercest snowstorms ever encountered by mankind. Their mettle tested by the harshest elements found on the planet, the climbers will face nearly impossible obstacles as a lifelong obsession becomes a breathtaking struggle for survival. |

This seems to have gotten a big release, I saw trailers and TV spots often, it had a $55,000,000 budget... But for some reason its not in ANY of the theaters near me.

Well I certainly can't say I had as much FUN watching this as much as San Andreas, Into The Storm, The Tower, and several other recent disaster films but that's probably due to the fact that those relied on their huge scale, crazy effects, deaths, humor, and fast pace. This film? Almost entirely about the characters and their struggles with themselves, each other, and (duh) the mountain itself. If you're looking for overly dolled up athletic hunks and a boat load of perfect modelesque women as the leads (lolSanAndreasandshit) you won't find them here but that's because - and this is one of my favorite things about it - they tried to be as accurate as possible when it came to depicting these people, who were very much real life individuals. Because of that, we get to see a lot of their very real flaws and there are some seemingly out of character moments that are really just out of character in 'movie world.' For example, one character is a genuinely sweet man but is the first to shout out insults and lose his cool when a 'small' (but certainly life threatening) thing happens. Most other films would have him be a hero of sorts and not snap at anyone, leaving that to someone who isn't meant to be likeable but that's not the case here - since that exact situation and 'tantrum' may very well have happened in the actual event. I didn't dislike anyone. In fact, I loved/really liked most of these people. Jake Gyllenhaal barely looked like himself here (I only recognized him by his voice and eyes) as Scott Fisher. Rob Hall was very likeable and had some of the more gutwrenching parts of the film. Beck's arc was pretty fantastic and I was scared for both him and his wife and kids. John Hawkes was loveable as Doug. He was one of the more sympathetic (and...almost desperate) people in the film and while some may find him annoying for 'holding people back' or whatever, I didn't. Yasuko Namba was really adorable, spunky at times (her praying and cheering because she was so happy to reach the final summit was great). You guys should read more about the real Yasuko after seeing this. She seemed like a pretty incredible person. I loved Emily Watson as Helen Wilton. She was sympathetic, genuinely caring, and was great as the 'mom' of the group. I almost lost my shit when she Spoiler: click to toggle Poor Helen. I'd hate to be in that position. The storytelling is perfectly fine. It drags a little bit in the middle (as much as I loved these people and seeing them, I don't think the set up needed to be THAT long) but once it picks up, it stays going and never really slows down. The action scenes aren't what one would expect from a disaster film and it never goes over-the-top with it. The effects are top notch and the whole movie felt freezing cold - just how a film about an Everest disaster SHOULD feel. ![]() Easily one of the most mature and thoughtful disaster dramas I've seen that was released in the 2010s, I can't recommend it enough<3. 7/10 quality, 8/10 entertainment (even with the slow middle section, I was still glued to it) |
