![]() One of the most influential vampire novels of the 20th century, I Am Legend regularly appears on the "10 Best" lists of numerous critical studies of the horror genre. As Richard Matheson's third novel, it was first marketed as science fiction (for although written in 1954, the story takes place in a future 1976). A terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive have been transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Except, that is, for Robert Neville. He alone appears to be immune to this disease, but the grim irony is that now he is the outsider. He is the legendary monster who must be destroyed because he is different from everyone else. Employing a stark, almost documentary style, Richard Matheson was one of the first writers to convince us that the undead can lurk in a local supermarket freezer as well as a remote Gothic castle. His influence on a generation of bestselling authors--including Stephen King and Dean Koontz--who first read him in their youth is, well, legendary. |

I really, really, REALLY need to read this. It's inspired SO many movies and adaptations and re-adaptations. |

It's a great little novella, yet to have been given a right and proper film adaptation. The Last Man on Earth was close but still came up a little bit short, not least because -- and please, nobody kill me for saying -- Vincent Price was mis-cast. Price was a wonderful actor but you simply don't by him as a fearsome vampire killer. Also, Matheson had to tone down the violence and what moments of sexuality are in the novel (such as female vamps trying to seduce our hero out of his house by writhing around like cats in heat on the lawn). Of course such things would be tame by today's standards but in the late '60s, when the film was made, it would have been far too racy. At any rate, I'm still waiting for a faithful adaptation. The book was indeed highly influential; not only for filmmakers (Romero has said there'd be no Night of the Living Dead without it) but also horror authors (Stephen King cites him as a major influence as well). In fact, come to think of it, it's been a couple years since I last read it. Think I'll break it out again this weekend. |

I Am Legend is a highly superior novella to any of the film adaptations that have been released, especially the Will Smith one. I'm really sad that nobody knows about the story and only relate to the Will Smith, which has little to nothing to do with the book. I'm hoping someday, somebody makes a spot on adaptation of the book. As Lon said, the Vincent Price one came pretty close. |

Gadzooks, I HATED the Will Smith flick. Why the hell did they CGI the infected??? It literally looked like Neville was fighting cartoons. And that ending...Oy to the friggin' vey... |
