Article from Sept. 2009: Fango just spoke to David Durston, writer/director of the ‘70s grindhouse classic I DRINK YOUR BLOOD, which—like practically every other horror film from that decade—has been targeted for a remake. The original flick is about a Mansonesque gang of psycho hippies who become infected with rabies, and go on an extremely gory killing spree. It was the first movie rated X for violence, and as the years went on, it was hard to find an uncut print since most theaters playing it made their own cuts according to “community standards.” Thankfully, the good folks at Grindhouse Releasing brought the movie to DVD several years ago in an uncut deluxe edition, giving the film a whole new life. Following that release, overtures to redo it came in to Durston, who at first resisted. “I wasn’t thinking about a remake until these offers started coming through,” Durston says. “I turned all of them down, because their budgets were too small. I decided that if I DRINK YOUR BLOOD would be remade, it should be better than the original, so that people really had something to see if they went to see it again.” Durston eventually went back to the old script and updated it; the essential story remains pretty much intact, but eight new characters have been dropped in. “Naturally, that means there is more violence in the picture,” the filmmaker says, “and it’s a little more detailed. But everything in the original is still in this version, with a few more things added.” One concession to modern times involved modernizing the drugs: The gang is no longer tripping on LSD, but tweaking on crystal meth. As of this writing, Durston has had meetings with producers—including veteran B-movie actress Sybil Danning, who likes the script and is definitely interested in making the movie (and whom Durston can attest still looks great). Now in his ’80s, Durston won’t direct the new I DRINK YOUR BLOOD, but he will be an active part of the producing team, and he’s not letting old age slow him down. “I’ve got arthritis in both legs, I’m blind in one eye, but I’m still writing, and the old brain keeps ticking like a time bomb.” |

Durston died in 2010. I love the original, and I've always been torn over how good a candidate it is for a remake. The 70's charm is most of it's appeal, but the plot is a good one. |

I love the original too, Vanessa. I agree that the 70's campy charm will be hard to recapture. It's such an outrageous film, with rabies infected meat pies, satanic hippies and an LSD ingesting grandpa, I just cant imagine the remake will be able to do it justice. I would be a bit more optimistic if Eli Roth were at the helm. His love for this type of genre film, and specifically films from this era, would guarantee a fun watch. |

I think Eli Roth is eve a fan of the original, so that would work well. Setting it in the 70s would be the best way to do it. That's trendy at the moment, too. |
