Chapter One
Spoiler: click to toggle Not even two pages in and there's already been a couple of references. That made me happy since it was already clear that it'd be pretty close to the film when it came to that. Those behind the TV magazine Eric was reading are either boring or not up for new things because I sort of like his ideas, lol. I hope they keep up with the '___stars' when mentioning some movies because that seems like something Eric would do - assign star ratings to every movie he watches, while watching them, and then keeping that rating in his head to tell people if they ever mention the movie around him. The part where he was trying to fill his schedule was cute. I'm also happy that it was made clear when exactly Eric 'fell in love with' Marilyn Monroe. I was kind of wondering that when watching the movie. The ending of this chapter was pretty sad.
Chapter Two
Spoiler: click to toggle I like it that we're getting a bit of time with Stella by herself. Despite the film, I'm kind of imagining her as looking like Shelley Winters but with the vulgarity and voice of Mrs. Mac from the original Black Christmas. I would really hate to live with her. I'd hate twice as much to be the ONLY person living with her. Poor Eric, lol.
Chapter Three
Spoiler: click to toggle Wow, what an abnormally short chapter! Ooh yay. I like that we're already getting stuff with Marilyn by herself as well. I think it'd be pretty rad if the book kept bouncing back and forth from Eric to Stella to Marilyn - with most of the story devoted to Eric, obviously. Marilyn's already a bit sympathetic.
Chapter Four
Spoiler: click to toggle I find it slightly hard to believe that Eric rarely stayed up past midnight, even as a kid. I really liked the dinner argument. Nutrients being boiled away is such a Stella thing to complain about and I liked his little mini-rant and him pouring the 'juice' into a glass so she'd quit bitching.
Starting chapters 5 and 6 now. I'll post my thoughts once you two catch up. I might read chapters 7 and 8 tonight as well, just in case I fall behind on reading. I'll be doing a lot of school stuff tonight and tomorrow after all. I'm really enjoying this so far.

Before starting this, I've spent a considerable amount of time annoyed today that the Gentlemen Prefer Blondes soundtrack has gone missing from Spotify.
Chapter One:
Spoiler: click to toggle I like the style already. I would have read Eric's column when I was a kid and newspapers still had that section. The film references are just as fun as they were in the film. It helps that Eric likes a lot of the same movies as me. Chapter Two:
Spoiler: click to toggle I'm also liking getting to see more of Stella, which wasn't something that I had really thought about. The dialogue is great. Chapter Three:
Spoiler: click to toggle One thing I was hoping for from this is getting to see more of Marilyn without her being filtered through Eric's perspective, and I'm glad the book is already delivering. Chapter Four:
Spoiler: click to toggle The flashbacks to Eric as a little kid are adorable. I keep looking forward to seeing what other movies get mentioned.
I'm stopping here, because I'm thinking about popping this into my purse for tomorrow. I don't know how much I'll be able to trust myself.

Chapter One:
Spoiler: click to toggle Right off the bat, I am enjoying this. I like the references... I will say one thing, though. This book paints Eric in a much darker light than the film did. Right from the beginning, he seems snarkier, meaner, and a lot more tortured than in the film. In the film, I actually found myself seeing him as fairly happy at the beginning, despite his shitty Aunt Stella. The book, though, has him in a much different light. He's still Eric, and he's still lovable in a really strange way, but he seems a little more bitter this time around.
Chapter Two:
Spoiler: click to toggle I agree with Jonathan that I like that we're getting some character development of Stella by herself. I think it gives her more of a soul that she lacked in the film... It's not a very good soul, as she's not incredibly likable, but I like that she's getting her own development. I kind of expected this book to be written in first-person from Eric's POV, but this is good, too!
Chapter Three:
Spoiler: click to toggle This is a very small chapter, almost too small to even be called a chapter, but I like that we're getting some POV time with Marilyn. In the film, she's kind of one-note simply for being the object of Eric's obsession, and that works well for the film, but since the novel is not being told from Eric's first-person POV, it's good that we're getting personal development for her character. We get to see how desperate she is for roles and how badly she wants to make it in the film business.
Chapter Four:
Spoiler: click to toggle I like that we get a little bit of Eric as a kiddie here, and it's oddly adorable. The novel is doing a good job of painting Eric as an innocent, sad character, which makes him sympathetic. I know he's bound to become a killer, but I still feel for him nonetheless. Plus, we get the weird argument at dinner between Stella and Eric. Stella is such a bitch.
Chapter Five:
Spoiler: click to toggle This was a decent chapter. I admit, I already like the chapters focusing on Eric the most, though I am still glad we get chapters devoted to developing the other characters from the film/novel. I like the dialogue in this chapter, and the sarcasm between Moriarty and Gallagher. I also really liked the character of Anne and how she is portrayed in this novel in her interactions with the two men. Short chapter, like all of them, so there isn't TOO much to say, unlike the Dead Man's Hand chapters, in which I could write full on one-page essays about each.
Chapter Six:
Spoiler: click to toggle This chapter shows Eric at work, and it continues the success of making him appear as a sad character who you feel for. He's a bit pathetic at times, but there's an innocence there, a naivete that is quite interesting to see develop. I loved him in the film was honestly surprised when he turned out to be a killer (I had no knowledge of the film when I watched it, lol. I assumed Eric would be a derpy hero.), so I'm glad they kept that innocence here, even if his character in the novel is a bit more bitter. I think the bitterness in his POV, though, will help add to his development as he slowly turns into a killer, as it would likely make it more understandable why he would snap like he did.

I'll take either.
Chapter Five:
Spoiler: click to toggle I'm already liking the cops/detectives more in the book than I did in the movie but that might be because they don't feel as much like a subplot as they did in the movie. Instead, it's already starting to feel as if they're just another small cluster of people on their way to colliding with Eric and his story, which is nice. I'm really looking forward to seeing more of Anne.
Chapter Six:
Spoiler: click to toggle I love the breakfast bit with the grapefruit. I really wanted him to slam it in her face or something. Urgh, Horace and Berger totally need to go away. I already can't stand them but at least Berger's douchiness is somewhat entertaining.
Chapter Seven:
Spoiler: click to toggle Marilyn is adorable. Lol@her apparently sleeping with girls' boyfriends randomly. I'm liking Stacey a lot too but I know better than to expect her to be a HUGE character. I kind of wish that the girls had accepted the offer and had a reading done.
Chapter Eight:
Spoiler: click to toggle Ew, Richie and Bart. Gah, so many unlikeable characters. If I read this before seeing the movie, I'd probably be annoyed by the fact that there's only three or four characters in this book who I actually really like. I wish I could make bets like the one featured in this chapter but I can't because of the internet. I forgot that Stacey was actually a total bitch to Eric, sheesh, lol. Marilyn and Eric are totally cute together. And yay for this whole chapter pretty much overflowing with movie stuff.

I'll read a few chapters Monday while I'm subbing. I should get SOME reading time, depending on what I am supposed to do as a sub in this class. It's an English class, so they may have me actually teaching a lesson or something.
Sorry I won't be reading much this weekend. Tired, working a lot, and have family stuff, and have to be up at 6:30 AM at the latest Monday morning for subbing. Good news? I get done at 3:30, since I'm subbing Zero Hour. :D

Chapter Five Spoiler: click to toggle I liked this chapter. I am really enjoying the author's writing style. I got the sense that the author was enjoying fleshing out these characters and giving them more of a story. There's a lot of fun phrasing and nice bits.
Chapter SixSpoiler: click to toggle I like using the previous chapter's stuff about health and nutrition as a means of transitioning into this chapter. The foreshadowing was a little over-the-top, but I did think the way they filled in how Eric spent his days at work was effective.
Chapter Seven:Spoiler: click to toggle The descriptions are really effective at conjuring a picture of the area at that time. Last chapter was good, but I think I like the description of the beach even more. I look forward to something a little 80s from books written at the time. I always want more outfit descriptions.
Chapter Eight: Spoiler: click to toggle Eric and Marilyn meeting had a different tone than the movie, which I think is one of the things that adds interest when reading the book. My interest in the chapter definitely increased once it switched to the two of them. I'm hoping there aren't too many chapters with the people Eric works with. I wouldn't mind seeing more of Stella.
Chapter Nine: Spoiler: click to toggle I am really disappointed that they didn't address them having crackers and wine under the covers with them. It is so weird. I would have been a lot more disappointed if they hadn't mentioned it at all, though. I like Moriarty and Ann. Their presence has more of a point in the novel than in the movie. I'm liking Ann a lot, and I don't remember having much of an opinion of her in the movie.
Chapter Ten:Spoiler: click to toggle Another really short chapter. I do like that it kept that mix of creepy and endearing that the movie had.

Chapter Seven:
Spoiler: click to toggle Once again, we get more development of Marilyn. I kind of like the novel version of her better. She wasn't hugely developed in the film, which is okay, but I like that we're getting a lot more of her here.
I also like Stacey. I like that the novel accentuates how bitchy of an edge her character has, even though I quite like her in both the film and the novel.
Chapter Eight:
Spoiler: click to toggle I am really liking the novel version of Eric... I really DO feel very bad for him. I know he's unstable, and the novel makes this kind of clear from the get-go, when I don't think the film did as well, but... He seems so sweet and innocent, and I feel like he could've been saved.
I like how he interacts with his douchebag coworkers, and the scene where he meets Marilyn. Ron Renauld kept it very close to the film version from what I remember, while also adding Eric's own viewpoints, as well as Marilyn's, into the chapter.
Chapter Nine:
Spoiler: click to toggle Once again, I like that the novel is giving other characters from the film their own identities, and not just characters seen through the eyes of Eric. I'm really liking the characters of Moriarty and Anne in the novel, and I like their sexy chemistry. It's gleefully dirty and yet somewhat cute.
Chapter Ten:
Spoiler: click to toggle All this chapter did was made me feel even more sad for Eric. I know, it's a novel based on a somewhat funny horror meta feat about a killer who takes on the identities of different film characters, but still... I want him to be happy. I want him and Marilyn to work out. I feel like, if she didn't end up accidentally standing him up, he could've been, I don't know, saved. Stabilized. Ya know?
Either way. I like this chapter. I can't wait for him to snap, but I'm also dreading it at the same time. Currently, Eric's just so cute and sweet, even in the slightly-more-bitter-and-harsh novel state.

Chapter Nine:
Spoiler: click to toggle I'm really growing quite fond of Moriarty and Anne. They're DEFINITELY more interesting in the book than they were in the movie. I feel like it should be mentioned that the crackers and wine were still under the covers in the book just like they were in the movie. I like that Anne's the one not wanting to take things seriously.
Chapter Ten
Spoiler: click to toggle Ewww, Joey in this chapter. I'm starting to not like Stacey at all. And why do I keep picturing her as that one best friend chick from the second Nightmare On Elm Street movie? The stuff with the poster was really cute even though what he wrote on it was a little awkward.
Chapter Eleven
Spoiler: click to toggle This is probably my favorite chapter so far. I really like how it kept going back and forth from Marilyn/Joey to Eric. I knew what the outcome would be but I kept hoping that maybe Marilyn and Eric would get this one good date together and that he would just unravel bigtime in a little while. Joey is 'meh.' The fact that there are SO many unlikeable people (intentional) in this book makes me wish that Eric would get more than five or six kills but since it's pretty faithful to the movie so far, I know that won't be the case. That hooker was a mean bitch.
Chapter Twelve
Spoiler: click to toggle For some reason, this chapter has me picturing Moriarty as Robert Forster (younger, 1970s-early 80s Robert, of course). Lol, that Franco guy who stabbed people in the ass randomly. I like that while Eric is obsessed with movies, Moriarty seems to have a big thing for music.
Chapter Thirteen
Spoiler: click to toggle I don't know which version of Stella's death I like more - the book version or the film version. The film version, of course, was a bit more stylish with the footage of the movie being thrown into what was happening to Stella but the book version seemed a bit meaner and more blunt. I loved this chapter too.

Spoiler: click to toggle I wanted more crackers and wine, like a full description of what led up to them bring a snack to bed with them. Or a scene of them having sex while trying not to crush the cracker box.

I like to think that something like that is a deleted scene from the movie itself and that it was heavily considered by the Ron Renauld before he decided to scrap it.
I'm already feeling the need to look up Ron Renauld and find out what else he's written. Like you, I like his writing style a lot. I wonder if this was written and published before the film's release or after.

Decided to read two chapters instead of four so you two can have some time to catch up.
Chapter Fourteen:
Spoiler: click to toggle I liked the funeral part but I wish it had been longer. I don't really like the priest. Stacey is starting to really annoy me and Eric following Marilyn and Stacey around is actually starting to get a bit creepy, lol. I love his reactions to things in this chapter. The part at the end with the cat made me pretty nervous.
Chapter Fifteen
Spoiler: click to toggle Moriarty is really, REALLY bad at covering up his emotions, I'm noticing. Annie's definitely starting to figure his shit out and I'm kind of hoping the book goes into his past a lot more than the movie did (and if I'm remembering correctly, it already is). I really liked this chapter, simple as it was.

This is getting taken out of my purse. I read eight chapters without remembering I hadn't posted anything.
Chapter Eleven
Spoiler: click to toggle I like that the transition between Eric's narration in this chapter from harmless to more dangerous was seamless. I was worried that they would try and have it happen like a switch being flicked instead of building off of what they had already established. I like that the author keeps using Eric's Cagney fascination in different ways. Also, channeling Cary Grant before a date is never a bad idea.
Chapter Twelve
Spoiler: click to toggle Moriarty going off about Anne's joke about him stabbing someone in the ass when he was a kid was a little too sudden. I don't know that I was supposed to laugh so much at that bit, since it seemed to be the transition to it being time to be serious. I'm really not minding at all that the book switched to what Anne and Moriarty were doing.
Chapter Thirteen
Spoiler: click to toggle This is a great pairing of scene and movie, even in book form. Reading it does bring more of my attention to ways that things could have went differently instead of seeming inevitable once you realize what movie he's watching.
Chapter Fourteen
Spoiler: click to toggle I think the author was great about having Eric start off as just a little creepy at the beginning of the novel to having him being more threatening now. Him following Stacey and Marilyn without knowing that they were talking about him was creepy and sad at the same time. The book is selling me a lot more in Marilyn being interested in Eric.
Chapter Fifteen
Spoiler: click to toggle I was actually looking forward to checking in on Anne and Moriarty at the start of this chapter. They are moving a lot slower than the main plot, though. I would like them to mix it up and get more from Anne's perspective, since Moriarty's shtick might get annoying eventually.

Chapter Eleven:
Spoiler: click to toggle I was dreading this chapter. I really did want things to turn out well for Eric. This chapter did a good job of showing that Eric was not only not all there to begin with, but that being accidentally stood up was really, really pushing him over the edge
Chapter Twelve:
Spoiler: click to toggle I like that we're getting development of Moriarty, but his chapters are easily my least favorite chapters, and this one was no exception.
Chapter Thirteen:
Spoiler: click to toggle Now we finally get to Aunt Stella's death. I love the build-up in this chapter, and I REALLY love Eric's POV of the whole ordeal. Great chapter. Very brief.
Chapter Fourteen:
Spoiler: click to toggle I loved this chapter. The funeral was a great scene, and I LOVED the final scene of the chapter with the fake shooting and him pretending to kill himself. That was a very sad, telling moment in the chapter. I LOVE the development he's getting in this novelization. Seriously.
Chapter Fifteen:
Spoiler: click to toggle Another Moriarty chapter. Like I said, his chapters are my least favorite chapters in this novel, but this was a very good one. We got some insight into his character, as well as into the character of Anne. I really am liking their relationship and development as a relationship.
Chapter Sixteen:
Spoiler: click to toggle This was a good chapter. It shows how Eric is taking on personas and what not, and that was one of my favorite parts of the original film. I look forward to reading on soon. Like, really soon.
