A mother and daughter are trapped and tormented in a black forest by a screeching creature – it is unlike anything we have heard before. Not human. Not animal. Like a thousand horses, like a mother’s clamour, a baby’s wail, a father’s howl. Their relationship at the breaking point, 10-year-old Lizzy is all out of faith in her mother, Kathy, but tries to stay brave and fearless. Kathy, on the edge and barely keeping it together, knows that only a mother’s protective love, her most primal instinct, can save her daughter from what’s lurking in the darkness…

Plot gives me slight The Hallow vibes and it's directed by Bryan Bertino (The Strangers, Mockingbird).

Release bump

Sorry about the wait. Since there wasn't a ton of stuff coming out this week, I was waiting to move them all on one day because of our technical issues.

So I saw it and liked it although it is a very unpleasant movie. Not unpleasant like the way something really gritty or gross just the relationship between the mother and daughter is just so bad you feel really uncomfortable watching them honestly. That and I wasn't big fan of how the 3rd act played out.

Really disappointing, if I'm being honest. Most, if not all, of the flashbacks were unnecessary. I think the only one worth keeping in was the very last one. Other than that though, either get rid of the rest or cut them together to show at the beginning of the movie instead intermittently throughout. The mother is a horrible person, but she has her redeeming moments. However minute they are. The kid is the star. I liked the look of the monster, but it could have been more vicious instead of mostly hiding in the shadows. Other issues I had were some of the actions the characters made, especially the medics that showed up. And why wasn't there a police unit? Oh, well. It could should have been so much better. 4/10

I have mixed feelings about the flashbacks. I thought they messed up the pacing of the film, but they were also the most powerful and affecting parts of the film. They were kind of what made the movie as opposed to the actual monster.
