A random invitation to a Halloween party leads a man into the hands of a rogue collective of pretentious artist wannabes intent on murdering him for the sake of their art, sparking a bloodbath of mishap, mayhem and hilarity.

Disclaimer: This is Jeremy Saulnier, of Green Room and Blue Ruin fame's first movie... But do not expect anything even remotely like those. It's not dark at all. Very violent and brutal and gory, but almost completely done in the name of comedy.

This film was hilarious, the more that I think about it. The film plays out as one long, violent, gory satire of wannabe pretentious art movements and the posers within them. It's actually quite clever in the way it makes fun of the "modern art" community.

One funny thing. The word "dildo" is used like 3,000 times in the film as a noun. "You're such a dildo." "We're gonna look like a bunch of dildos." "Who is this dildo?" "Don't be a dildo." "He's gonna think we're a bunch of dildos." All of these lines are spoken at least once throughout the 75 minutes of this movie. XD It's quite funny that, of all words, Jeremy chose DILDO as the one to repeat a lot.

The film is incredibly straight-forward and funny. It's stupid, particularly in the last act, but it's forgivable considering the fact that it's meant to be a comedy.

Also, I'm surprised by this. It was made for no budget in 2006, and it features a gay dude sex scene, which was surprising. Most films in 2006, save for, I guess, Brokeback Mountain and films from Strand and TLA Releasing didn't have the balls to feature gay sex, but this one does. Sure, it's played for laughs, but it's still surprising they thought to have that in there. There is also an openly bisexual character who says "I believe most people probably are." That's another moment that I wouldn't have expected from a film in 2006 or 2007, considering bisexuals, even today, have trouble finding proper representation outside of Gregg Araki films. ;)

Overall, I recommend watching this film if you have nothing better to do. It's not a great movie, nor is it one I feel like I'll watch a lot, whereas I can see myself watching Green Room over and over and over over the course of the next 25 years. It's definitely worth a watch, though.

6.5/10 Quality; 7.5/10 Entertainment

I should have watched this when I had a chance. It's very much a different Jeremy Saunier than the one today.

Almost halfway into it and I'm liking it. Three attractive guys, the main chick reminds me of myself in high school, and I LOVE that 11 years ago, this film made fun of the obnoxious hipsters of today.
