Producer Howard Hawks' adaptation of the John Campbell story of an arctic expedition that runs afoul of a blood sucking alien is often credited (or blamed - depending on who you talk to) with launching the evil monster tries to destroy humanity films that were so prevalent in the 1950's.

I ended up not loving this as much as I hoped I would and honestly, I'd take even the 2011 prequel (to the remake) over this. (wary) It's pretty much all talk, no action (well...there's about 3 minutes of action in its 87 minute runtime). Thankfully, it has some really great things. For example, the fire scene was terrific, the noises the creature made made me pretty uncomfortable, and I loved the opening a lot - especially the music!

I'm hoping that the characters talking over each other and the fact that a solid half dozen of the characters totally blended into each other was intentional and not just poor writing/directing. Parts of the camp/buildings reminded me a lot of the 1982 film which was really cool and makes me like both films a bit more, lol. For some reason planes like the one the men came in on at the beginning freak me out. I would NEVER want to be in one of those.

I was happy that this wasn't without female characters (and Nicholson was my favorite). Her mannerisms and way of speaking sometimes reminded me of Vickie from Friday The 13th Part 2. Don't ask why. Some of the lines were really poorly delivered but I didn't mind too much. One of my favorite scenes was the discovery of the saucer in the ice (complete with a thermite blast!) and that was FULL of wonky lines. I was fond of the well written chatter about the dangers of bringing the creature/alien back with them but I wish they had been even more scientific about it.

"There are no enemies in science - only phenomenon to study" is probably my favorite line of this.

Heavily flawed, a little overrated by some, but still mostly entertaining.

5/10 quality, 6/10 entertainment.

Well, I finally watched this one. Not nearly as great as John Carpenter's remake, but I still found myself liking this once the military crew reached the flying saucer's crash site. Every attempt on the life of The Thing is pretty great, considering that the alien in this is only one man and not a shapeshifter. Still . . . I love that fire scene and the use of the generator. Too many characters indeed, but enjoyable enough.

"Keep watching the skies."

We have both the 'restored' version( meaning they left in some of the slightly-risque banter) and the Colorized version and pretty much alternate them for viewing.
Good stuff.

A great movie with an unfortunately lame monster.
