I didn't mind this and it's certainly not as terrible as some have said it is (I've mostly just seen negative things on IMDB, surprise surprise). It's FAR from being great though - it's not even one of the 100 best of 2015. In some ways, it's like a smaller scale version of The Walking Dead with fewer characters (five or six instead of a dozen or more). There's a lot of really juicy person vs. person conflict in this that was interesting enough to keep me from being too annoyed by the fact that zombies are only featured for maybe five minutes of the film's runtime. Some scenes are actually mildly disturbing and I was never bored despite the fact that the film is like...90% dialogue. Unfortunately, I didn't really care for most of the characters. Evie was incredibly sympathetic but she made some INCREDIBLY stupid decisions and didn't fight as hard as she should have. She was awfully passive. She redeemed herself but would fall back into being stupid only to redeem herself again and the pattern continued. She was inconsistent more than anything. I HATED what's-his-face, the one who joined John and Evie at a certain point. SUCH a fucking pig and I couldn't wait for him to get ripped to shreds. The random soldier guy who showed up at one point has the most gorgeous eyes I've ever seen and was damn fine in general but had NOTHING to do. The four characters at the beginning were some of the more interesting ones but sadly, they were all cast aside (we don't even find out what happened to two of them!) after the first fifteen minutes to give John and the Pig more room. Ew. John himself was ridiculously cowardly. I hated him. So, so much, especially when he just...rolled on the ground whining while Spoiler: click to toggle I usually don't blame bystanders but he...really could've and should've stepped in instead of being such a wuss. The effects were mostly great, there were a couple of decent shocks, and the story played out in an okay (but definitely been-there-done-that) fashion. I liked it but I don't see myself sitting through it again 5/10 quality, 5.5/10 entertainment. |
