We probably have another thread for this but I couldn't find it even though I remember there being posts in it? Let's just merge the two when we find it. I know I'm not crazy. (d)

Anyway, this was NOT the kind of movie I was expecting it to be. Serial killer films are usually hit-or-miss, either really fucking good (Monster, anyone?) or really fucking terrible (pretty much anything by Ulli Lommel and others who make terrible made cheap ass movies to exploit real tragedies). This, thankfully, falls into the 'really fucking good' category and I'm kind of surprised I'm saying that since it's like ninety-five percent drama. I DO still count it as a Horror film the same way I count the Bundy film based on Ann Rule's The Stranger Beside Me - it just doesn't aim to be scary or physically graphic with the deaths. Instead, it's pretty interesting and satisfying and fairly accurate (with some fictional elements thrown in for dramatic effect and to make the story the film told flow better which, in this case, worked in the film's favor when it could've EASILY made the film an overly flawed, mostly bad mess). There's some decent character development, most things are treated in a sensible (and sensitive) manner, and it never crosses over into exploitation territory - even when people are being killed. The deaths are mostly offscreen but there are a couple of violent moments including one sudden death that came out of nowhere and will be pretty shocking to anyone who didn't know that happened during Ramirez's childhood. It was well handled, I thought. I loved the main girl even though she's not based on any one real life figure that I know of (correct me if I'm wrong but I think she's meant to be a mash up of several women who ARE real people). The performances were all really good too. This sort of makes me like Lou Diamond Phillips again. (lol) Bellamy Young was really good in this. I'll have to keep an eye out for her in other things.

Don't expect gore or a lot of action. Also don't expect it to be 100% accurate to the real killings/events. Just go into it expecting a mostly solid drama/character study with Horror elements.

6.5/10 quality, 7.5/10 entertainment.
