You know those times when you wake up in the morning after a hard night partying and getting drunk, and after getting your bearings, you realize that you did something seriously fucked-up last night?

Well, a good chunk of England* is having one of those right now. This is probably gonna have repercussions for anyone who's a fan of British media, or anything made in the UK (like Game of Thrones), so in an abstract, roundabout way, it kind of affects us here on this site too, even us Americans.

*(I say "England" and not "Britain" or "the UK" because Scotland and Northern Ireland would like to emphatically remind you that they wanted no part of this silliness. They're the guys banging on England's door screaming "hey, what the fuck, man!?!?" And Wales is just a made-up place.)

Lol@all of the people who voted without even realizing what they were actually voting for. So stupid but hey, I guess now they can't criticize Americans for our poor voting choices (though we do deserve SOME criticism). (coffee)

I honestly don't know enough about this to have an opinion, except that both sides come across as petty and immature to me. At least the most vocal supporters do (they spend more time demonizing each other than actually trying to understand the other side's PoV. And considering how close the vote was, I'm willing to bet both sides had some valid points)

And this isn't going to have any impact whatsoever in Game of Thrones. Or if it does, it'll be minuscule for the viewers

Wasn't the vote 48.9 to 51.1 percent or something? If so, that's incredibly close. And I doubt half the people in the country are totally "retarded" (I've seen that word thrown around more lately than ever before, randomly, and it often pops up in fights about this issue in particular, lol). If it'd been like 94.5 to 5.5 percent then yeah, I'd say that 5.5% should....probably get on board or rethink some things. :P

It's okay. Everything will be okay here in the States. You know why? Donald Trump's going to become our next President. Hooray! (suicide)

I remember one headline reading something like "Brits Officially Lose Right to Call Americans Stupid". I will admit, that was a funny headline. That said, calling the people who supported it stupid is too far. That's a low blow IMO, and it only plays into their prejudices about how the rest of society either doesn't care about them or outright scorns them as a burden. This was a "fuck you" vote by people who had been left behind by the rise of free trade, automation, and new technology (or at least saw themselves in that category), and thought that they had nothing to lose.

However, I will say that this is basically the logical conclusion of a culture of rampant anti-intellectualism, one that treats expertise, knowledge, and doing some research before you open your mouth as signs of elitism and snobbery, and ignorant, outspoken buffoonery as a salt-of-the-earth virtue. It's what happens when romanticism (pardon the pun) trumps enlightenment, when doing something that feels good on an emotional level wins out over thinking things through, when an entire nation says "fuck it, YOLO". Reality TV and tabloid culture, what have you wrought?

Yeah. As said, I am 100% willing to bet there are very valid arguments on both sides, you don't get a vote that even if there's not (alternatively, both options are HORRIBLE and there's valid arguments to why you're screwed) Either way, I'm not convinced this is as black and white as either side makes it out to be. Though as said, I don't know all the details about Britain and how the EU relates to it, so I can't have an official opinion on Brexit

We're getting a good preview of what the day after Trump wins the general election would be like. It's absolutely terrifying to watch even the politicians that were in favor of leaving the EU have no fucking clue what they should do now.

I totally agree with everything Kevin R. is saying, except that leaving out racism is giving a significant portion of Brexit's supporters too much credit.

Well put. The whole "voting based only on emotions and not your brain, not logically, not intelligently" thing (I know that's not EXACTLY what you said but...) reminds me of all of the Bernie Sanders supporters here in the States who, as a "fuck you" to Hillary Clinton are planning on voting for TRUMP (or they're just not going to vote at all, or they're going to write Sanders in even though it's obvious that he's NOT going to win, period). They're going by anger, attitude, and protest-voting instead of doing what is intelligent.

I've been called a snob for actually looking into things before "opening my mouth" and accused of "benefitting from white privilege" because I have access to information and many tools at my disposal thanks to the internet and the ability to properly research. Meanwhile, the people pointing the finger at me are using computers to do so when they could just as easily use those computers to spend time researching their causes and educating themselves instead of, y'know, bashing people for being smart. (wary)

One sign of our culture's dumbing down that absolutely infuriates me and only loosely ties into THIS issue - nonsense words and abbreviations and text-speak being added to the fucking DICTIONARY. No. Nononono. That is the most asinine, counterproductive thing on the planet. Yes, I use abbreviations as well but I will seriously consider shooting myself in the face the day that "lol, omg, imo, tbh, gurl, lmfao, kmsl" and so on are things that are acceptable for job applications, official documents, and written essays. Ew.

If I ever have to see "2" for "to" or "4" for "for" on an internet forum again again..... For the love of God, people, they're small words. Type them.

And I think the hardcore Bernie Sanders supporters in general tend to be very short-sighted. He's promising a bunch of nice stuff, but there's no way that he can actually deliver on it. Yet I've seen some flip out and say people who are talk about how realistic something is should be ignored for wanting to stay grounded or "keep the status quo" or whatever. Also, scary as a Trump presidency is, I'm not surprised that a lot of Bernie supporters are going to vote for him, partially because they'd already convinced me of how short-sighted they all are. They want change, they don't seem to particularly care what the actual change is (probably since they think nothing can be worse than the status quo.... which is so very wrong) as long as it happens. And Hillary embodies the status quo while Trump does represent change (bad change, but hey. If you shortsightedly don't care about the change you're getting (coffee) )
