Eleven police officers were shot ambush-style, including four fatally, in Dallas Thursday night by at least two snipers, amid a protest against the recent police shootings of two black men, Alton Sterling in Louisiana, and Philando Castile in Minnesota, according to the Dallas Police.

Officials said the gunmen aimed to kill as many officers as possible. Among the officers killed, at least one was a Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer and at least one of the wounded was a DART officer.

One suspect is in custody, following a shootout with Dallas SWAT officers, police said, and a suspicious package was found near the suspect's location. Police said the package is being secured by the bomb squad.

Another individual, whom police initially identified on Twitter as a "suspect" and circulated a photo of on Twitter, has turned himself in. In a statement, they referred to him as a "person of interest."

Chaos erupted just before 9 p.m. when a pair of snipers in elevated positions opened fire on officers, who were protecting protesters, police said.

Some of the 11 officers were shot in the back, police said, adding that one civilian was wounded.

In an earlier statement, Dallas Police Chief David Brown said that two of the officers were in surgery and three in critical condition.

Police said the suspects were situated on two different perches or garages.

Marie Saavedra, a reporter with ABC Dallas affiliate WFAA tweeted, "MANY gunshots heard in video I captured in #Dallas, just before 9p as rally marched through downtown."

Following the reports of shots fired, public transportation was suspended in downtown Dallas: "DART rail and bus service in Downtown Dallas has been suspended due to criminal activity," read a tweet.

Witnesses to the mayhem took to social media, including the Instagram user below, who shot video of individuals running frantically, while shots being fired could be heard.

In a statement released early Friday morning, Texas governor Greg Abbott said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Dalllas law enforcement community and the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) officers killed and injured this evening...In times like this we must remember -- and emphasize -- the importance of uniting as Americans."

Puppy, just because there's no evidence she killed her aunt doesn't make her dating material.

^ Exactly! I think that one or two of the wounded were people who were protesting police brutality. If so, that makes it all so much more moronic and self defeating. Tonight, the people weren't protesting police brutality were not faced with violence at the hands of the police. They were faced with violence being carried out by people trying to KILL the police. Now several people protesting police brutality are injured and dozens (if not hundreds) more have been traumatized by someone who appears to be "acting on their behalf."

I'd say it should be clear that being aggressive and violent won't help this cause and that killing cops will only put innocent bystanders at risk (and these cops certainly didn't deserve to be shot/killed either).

I just got into it with one of the biggest activists in the state of Florida. She says this is "justice" and that they deserved to die and that all cops deserve to be murdered. She said there's no such thing as innocent bystanders and that if someone sees injustice and fails to act, they are even worse of a person than the racists in the first place.

Cool. That bitch should be sure to tell that to the black people who witnessed police brutality against other black people but were too afraid to act. I'm sure they'd L-O-V-E to be lumped in with a person (who may actually be racist) who killed another black person in front of them!

This sort of situation is exactly why I feel like activism is faceplanting horribly. Something's got to give.

I normally try to be respectful of people's opinions... but what a fucking idiot. And since I can guarantee this stupid bitch has been a bystander to something immoral at some point in her life, I guess it's only fair to shoot her too (but don't worry, she'll have a perfectly valid reason for why she didn't intervene when she could have, but it only applies to her) I'm guessing her "activism" is primarily limited to tumblr and twitter posts as well?

Not just lumped in, deemed worse than an actual murderer in this scenario.

I can send you the screencaps and stuff if you want. It's truly horrifying. Only one person is agreeing with her (and this person is a random white girl - I haven't seen a single black person agree with what this 'activist' is saying about this shooting or even about the murders of people at the hands of police - that's how extreme she is - black people don't even agree with the things she says on their behalf most of the time!).

I think I'm good taking your word for it. And yeah, the most stupid activists are never in the groups they pretend to represent. They're too busy using their voices to speak out and be heard by everyone while doing it rather than letting said groups speak for themselves.

But hey, safe to say I was right that her "activism" is contained to the Internet. I can't even begin to count the number of times Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr posts have truly combatted discrimination in real life. Probably since there aren't any

All I can say is violence is not the answer. Gandhi and the like died for nothing if all we can think about is an eye for an eye.
