Three friends filming an audition tape for an extreme reality show, take part in shark cage diving, only to be left in great white infested waters, turning their recording into life and death.

It's about time Open Water cashed in on the recent shark craze.

I watched this a couple of weeks ago and I was surprised that it managed to be as good as it was. I was worried that it would be a total ripoff of 47 Meters Down (which is still a better film) with the three main characters trapped in an unhooked cage with sharks circling them as they run out of air. So I was happy that it ended up being a disaster movie (complete with a rogue wave and over a dozen implied deaths courtesy of something that has nothing to do with sharks!) for a portion of its runtime.

The first film is strictly a "survival movie with sharks" (and it is great, still the best of the three films) while the second is strictly a "survival movie with no sharks but lots of people doing stupid things and turning on each other." This actually blends those two perfectly. We get the usual human drama (handled very well, not overcomplicated, and actually fairly realistic given the circumstances) but we also get plenty of shark action as well as other goodies to spice things up. The deaths in this are also much more graphic than they were in the first two films. The parts that got the biggest reaction from me involved the wave and its aftermath, the first shark death (it's not overly bloody but the way it's handled and the screams kind of bothered me), and the stuff on the raft.

There's a handful of random survivors who drift in and out of the movie for a scene or two at a time which really worked. After all, it would've been unrealistic to have 30 people on a boat that is capsized only to have the three main characters be the only ones to survive the initial disaster. How convenient! So the filmmakers were wise in focusing on the three leads while also having four or five others pop up occasionally, with others just drifting aimlessly (never to be seen again) and still others being rescued every now and then.

The characters worked. All of them were fairly distinct and I loved and hated all of them at different times. They make some dumb decisions but overall, I'd say that they're at least smarter than a few of the characters in Open Water 2. (lol) It's found footage so expect a lot of shaky cam but there's only a couple of scenes where it was really distracting and poorly done. I didn't like that, as another reviewer said, the camera always managed to catch every single little important thing that happened in the story. Realistically (and they certainly were going for "realistic" with this film), a couple of things would be heard-but-not-seen, seen-but-not-heard, or missed entirely. But that's a small complaint.

The three characters spent a fair amount of time arguing about their personal relationships and what they should do to get rescued but it was the right amount of time. The ending wasn't the least bit surprising but I was pretty shocked by the overall death order and how certain characters died. It ended on a somewhat jaw dropping note.

My ranking of the films is probably 1 (8.5/10) > 3 (6.5/10) > 2 (5.5-6/10)
