(CNN) One person died when a car plowed into a crowd following a dispersed gathering of white nationalists and counterprotesters in Charlottesville.

Shortly before the attack Saturday, fistfights and screaming matches erupted between counterprotesters and white nationalists protesting the removal of a confederate monument. The clashes led to the cancellation of scheduled protests, sending demonstrators from both sides marching on nearby streets. A few hours later, a car slammed into a throng of counterprotesters...

What happened?

- Counterprotesters met white nationalists and other right-wing groups at the site of Saturday's "Unite the Right" event hours before the rally was set to start.

- Clashes broke out and police began to disperse crowds.

- Local officials declared the rally an "unlawful assembly" and Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency.

- About two hours later, a gray Dodge Challenger rammed into a crowd of counterprotesters walking down a street in downtown Charlottesville.

- The driver slammed the car in reverse at high speed and left the site of the crash. He was arrested later that afternoon.

The victims

- A 32-year-old woman was killed in the car-ramming incident, Charlottesville Police Chief Al Thomas said.

- A total of 19 others were also hurt, including five people still in critical condition Sunday, a spokeswoman for the University of Virginia Medical Center said.

- Two Virginia State Patrol troopers died when a helicopter crashed in a wooded area near Charlottesville after monitoring Saturday's events. The pilot, Lt. H. Jay Cullen, 48, and Trooper Berke M.M. Bates, who would have turned 41 on Sunday, were killed. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.

- City officials say at least 15 others were wounded in events associated with the scheduled rally.

The suspect

- The driver, James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Maumee, Ohio, is being held at a Virginia jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, malicious wounding and failure to stop in an accident that resulted in death, said Superintendent Martin Kumer with the Albermarle-Charlottesville County Regional Jail.

- Fields' mother, Samantha Bloom, told CNN affiliate Toledo Blade, her son told her last week he was going to an "alt-right" rally, but she was not involved in his political views. CNN's attempts to reach Bloom were unsuccessful.

- The Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigations have launched a civil rights investigation into the deadly crash.

- Three other men were arrested Saturday. One of them faces a charge of carrying a concealed handgun and the other is charged disorderly conduct. The third man, originally from Virginia, was arrested on suspicion of assault and battery.

The investigation

Federal authorities launched a civil rights investigation hours after the incident.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said US Attorney Rick Mountcastle is leading the investigation.

"The violence and deaths in Charlottesville strike at the heart of American law and justice. When such actions arise from racial bigotry and hatred, they betray our core values and cannot be tolerated," Sessions said in a statement. "Justice will prevail."

So, are they still just harmless trolls and pranksters?

And the President took two days to give a response that specifically called out the neo-Nazis, and only after members of his own party were coming down on him for it.

The count of people injured is up to 34 now. The New York Times has an article about the woman that died.

I read a truly disgusting article about the deceased woman.

This whole thing just makes me feel sick. It also makes me sick that so many indie filmmakers and actors and paranormal investigators and authors (all Horror) I know are totally cool with this. I just saved well over a thousand dollars over the next year because I decided to stop supporting their projects.

Why is bigotry so common in the Horror community?

Which filmmakers etc are you talking about? And which article? I can't imagine bigotry being as rampant as you're suggesting in the horror community. I've been a member of numerous horror communities since the internet first gave rise to them, and I can't say I've ever encountered it on the level you're suggesting it exists. Sure, every now and then you get an occasional asshole, but I don't see it as something widespread in the genre community.

At any rate, I've been putting off replying about this incident because, really, what is there to say? It should not have happened. Racism should not exist -- it's the 21st goddamn century, we're supposed to be better than this. And sadly too many people forget about the "peaceably" part of the right to peaceably assemble when blind, ignorant hatred and anger are involved. Hatred trumps civility every time; you need not look further than our White House to see that (I used the word "trump" for a reason, after all).

If I thought it would make a difference, I would tell all those Alt-Right/supremacists/bigots that our country is a nation founded by immigrants, and that opening our arms to other races, classes and beliefs is part of our country's mission statement. As such, hating others for the color of their skin, for their beliefs, or for their sexual preferences, is categorically un-American, and they should find another country to live in because they're not welcome here.

But those words would fall on deaf ears. Because hate not only trumps civility, it also trumps trumps rationality. And bigotry, as we all know, is by definition irrational.

Jon sees more of the Facebook stuff, but loads of people in the horror community on reddit are red pillers. They just know enough to not make it totally obvious. Even one of the Dreadit moderators are one.

Ah. I'm rarely on Facebook (and when I do log in, I don't visit any horror groups), and believe it or not, have never visited Reddit, hence my ignorance. Kind of glad to be ignorant in this instance, though; if Reddit's that full of haters, I'm glad I've never ventured there.

It's hidden enough that if you just did a surface level look around that you probably wouldn't notice it. Most of the people there don't agree with the sexist and racist groups, so they can't start talking about it in horror movie threads without expecting a little bit of a backlash. Chances are you're going to run into someone that spends their time in other subreddits talking about how women are evil idiots without having to look around too much. Misogyny is the gateway to the racism.

In which case it's just as well that I've never bothered checking out Reddit. My faults are numerous and wide-ranging, but I am proud to say do not extend to racism, misogyny or bigotry. So I doubt I'd fit in well there.

Back to the topic at hand, though. I have read arguments from some very insipid people that the anti-bigot protesters are also partially to blame for the violence which occurred. And to an extent, that is true. It takes two to tango and all that. There's also the matter of the first amendment granting even racist asshole fuck-tards the right to assemble and voice their beliefs, however brain-dead and cocksuck-y they may be. And while intelligent and higher evolved people have a right to attend those assemblies to protest, neither side have the right to lay a hand on the other in the process. That's the definition of the right to peaceably assemble -- get as loud as you want, use every insult in the book if you want, but you do not have the right to physically assault anyone in the course of the debate.

Now, I don't know which side threw the first punch, but I would argue that in this instance, who swung first is actually irrelevant. What is relevant, exceedingly so, is that the reason these despicable skid marks felt empowered to assemble in the first place and spew their filth is because we have as our president a man who wears his elitism, sexism and intolerance for anything not rich and white on his thousand-dollar sleeve, and his daily verbal vomiting of hate, slantism and petty bile shows the haters, hey, it's cool, step on up, spread your muslim- and nigger-hatin' wings and fly.

That's our America now. Fifty-some years of advancements in civil rights, undone in the span of a weekend simply because Donald Trump didn't want to risk alienating his base of elitist white assholes. And when he does finally denounce them -- two days after the fact -- he turns around the very next day and demonstrates incontrovertibly that his denouncement was barely more than lip service.

If we really want this shit to go away, we have to start with the biggest obstacle standing in the way of our progress -- and right now, that obstacle is our own fucking president.
