Police arrested two people and have named one suspect after at least 12 people are dead and another 80 injured in Barcelona, Spain on Thursday after a van deliberately plowed into a popular tourist area in the city’s Las Ramblas district. Driss Oukabir was born in Morocco, and is in his 20s, the BBC reports. While police have two people in custody, they say neither of the them were the driver of the van. It was also unclear if Oukabir was the one arrested, or if he was the driver of the van. Police called the incident a terror attack, with the “intention of killing as many people as possible.” The “Cabinet of Crisis” in Spain has been called to take appropriate measures to retaliate, the police said. The Spanish Ministry of the Interior said the latest numbers of injured were as follows: · 13 people killed, · 15 with serious injuries, · 23 with less serious injuries, · 42 with mild injuries. The Catalonian president has declared three days of mourning for the victims of the attack. “Catalonia has been, and will be, a land of peace. A place of welcome. And we will not let a minority end our way of being that has been forged over centuries,” Carles Puigdemont said. A senior police official said the van attack was linked to an explosion the previous day in which 1 person was killed. Catalan police also said that a driver drove into two policemen at a police checkpoint at 7:24 p.m. local time on Thursday. They say the driver was arrested, but it is not clear if this event was related to the incident at Las Ramblas. Police say a vehicle in connection with the attack was located in on the outskirts of Barcelona, and that a bomb squad is currently on scene investigating. At Las Ramblas, Catalan police said 10 of the 32 people injured are in serious condition after the white van mounted a curb, striking several people. Video shows the white van stopped on a walkway with heavy damage to the front bumper. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack according to a statement carried on its Aamaq news agency, but that hasn’t been confirmed by police. Joaquim Forn, the regional interior chief who is in charge of the police told reporters the “number of fatalities will likely rise.” Spain’s El Periodico newspaper reported that two armed men were holed up in a bar in the city centre, and reported gunfire in the area following the van crash. However, police later said no such incident took place. Authorities have yet to confirm gunfire in the area. Photos on social media show several people on the ground as emergency services arrive. http://globalnews.ca/news/3677329/barcelona-van-into-crowd/ |

Caught this on the news at the gym. It inspired one of my mother's patented "kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out" rants on the subject. |

I read that citizens of 34 different countries were killed or injured in the attack. I can't even imagine how confusing and scary it must be to be in a situation like this in a foreign country. They're saying now that the cell had 12 people in it. Driss Oukabir wasn't in the car. He turned himself in. He is claiming that his brother stole his information to rent the car used in the attack. It's his brother, Moussa Oukabir, that they think may have been the driver of the car. Police killed five jihadists in the second attack. They haven't officially said if he was one of them. The driver may also have been the third suspect that they arrested, who I haven't seen named yet. It's worrying that it was such a large cell. That's unusual now. |
