I really hope Leatherface's chainsaw kills are as good as that one. It's sad that Dawn Of The Dead '04 had a better chainsaw death than most films in a franchise with the word CHAINSAW in the damn title.

LolGood. We need more zombie movies like this. Like I just told you, I'm shocked that we didn't get more movies like this in theaters after the success of The Walking Dead. Instead, we've just gotten some Resident Evil movies, Dead Snow (not in theaters in the U.S.) 1 and 2, World War Z and Warm Bodies that I can think of off the top of my head. Oh, and a fuckton of cheesy direct-to-DVD flicks.

I'm not sure if we will though since all of the 'fast zombie' haters freak out whenever a movie like this comes out.

I think it's because we had so much zombie media that, while the more casual fans still can't get enough Walking Dead, the more hardcore horror fans have been sick of zombies for a while. Most of this generation's "big" zombie movies -- this, 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, Dead Snow, Zombieland, Romero's second Dead trilogy -- came out back in the '00s, and it's been the same for books and games -- The Zombie Survival Guide was published in 2003, World War Z and Dead Rising were both from '06, and the Left 4 Dead games were in '08 and '09. We've had the World War Z movie, Warm Bodies, State of Decay, Dead Rising 3 in the last few years, and of course The Walking Dead is still a hit, but from what I've seen, it's definitely slowing down compared to back in, say, 2008 where you had zombie all over movies, games, books, and internet memes. The zombie craze started over a decade ago, and I remember people talking about "zombie fatigue" back in 2012. Overall, ten years from now I think people are gonna look back on zombies as one of those things that was biggest in the '00s, and kinda stuck around for a while in the early-mid '10s as it faded out, kinda like how everyone associates slashers with the '80s even though we still had some coming out in the '90s (before Scream briefly made them popular again). By "hardcore" I mean the people who watch, play, read, and otherwise consume a lot more horror-related media than everyone else. I know that there are some hardcore horror fans out there who friggin' love zombies. Hell, I'm one of them. But like I said, there are a lot more who hear about this latest zombie movie or game or whatever and say "another one?" And again, I'm one of them too -- how many times must I see the same story about a handful of survivors locked in a fortified building under siege by zombies? I see this zombie fatigue more with video games than anything, and speaking as someone who plays a lot of games, that's probably having a big influence on my opinion. I can't count how many comments I've read from people saying they're utterly bored with zombie games and survival games in general, frequently comparing any newly-announced title to DayZ, State of Decay, or old-school Resident Evil sight unseen. Horror gaming's turned for the weird/supernatural in the last several years, taking a lot more influence from creepypasta than Dawn of the Dead. |

(Kevin's quotes are in the spoilertags) Spoiler: click to toggle [I can't say I'm SICK of them. It's nice that zombies are such a big thing. I would say that they 'zombie boom' - even though it's slowly dying - fills the void left by the absence of a bunch of big theatrical slasher films, but I can't since we don't even get many big theatrical zombie films (like I've said, it's a surprise that we didn't get at least a few in 2011 or 2012 since TWD became such a massive success) and the ones we do get are almost universally despised (World War Z, anyone?). On top of that, we keep getting crapfest after crapfest that fail to bring anything new or special to the genre (and many that are 'old school' in structure are simply...bad). It's depressing when the bulk of a subgenre has turned into Comedies and SyFy-esque throwaway movies that are only really good to laugh at with a beer in hand. I'm not sick of the zombie 'craze'; I'm sick of the fact that The Walking Dead is the only REALLY good (and I use that term loosely since that show's made plenty of mistakes) thing we have going on and I'm sick of not getting more movies like this (or hell, even more movies like Land Of The Dead which I also love but not AS much as this). ![]() And sidenote; while I do agree that the late 2000s were huge for the subgenre, I noticed the popularity increasing in 2004 with the release of this, Shaun Of The Dead, and Resident Evil: Apocalypse with Land Of The Dead coming soonafter in 2005 (which was the year I started noticing more and more direct-to-DVD zombie releases like All Souls Day and stuff like that). |

This is a bit troubling but is overall plenty worthwhile. Frankly, as a remake this one here succeeds quite nicely with some rather gruesome-looking zombie make-up and gore-gags, fantastic action scenes that are utterly thrilling which include the final escape attempt from the mall inside the barricaded truck while trying to fend off the unreal swarms around them, numerous quality thwarted escape attempts inside the parking garage and a few funny gags spread throughout when dealing with the zombie horde outside, not to mention the utterly thrilling and breath-taking opening set-up that still manages to shock and entertain at the same time. There's still some problems here, from unrealistic character stupidity to throw themselves into danger, a complete lack of common knowledge or intelligence displayed, a dearth of zombie action in the middle for useless moments to pile up as they live their lives, and then comes the running zombie debacle that really permeates this one and moreover is the key to getting through to this one, as such a massive flaw against the main characters themselves is enough to knock this one down enough for some to despise it, as well as its standing as a remake in the first place. It's still got enough to entertain, but there's some flaws to be found. |

I'm a hundred percent fine with the running zombies. After all, if the zombies were slow moving, most fans of the original would be bitching even more about this film for "trying too hard to be exactly like the original film." The fast zombies do a good job of setting it apart, not to mention they're a lot more intense and vicious than many slow moving zombies. I agree that some of the characters made stupid moves (Nicole going after the dog for example) but it doesn't really hurt the movie for me. I actually wish we'd gotten MORE of the characters living their lives in the mall. We only got about ten minutes of that as opposed to the original which had, at minimum, a full hour of that sort of thing. |

That's besides the point. The concept of running zombies biologically can't happen due to rigor mortis, which occurs in the human body after death. The muscles and ligaments in the human body stiffen and straighten out before eventually rotting away, which would mean there's nothing there to regenerate which is against the functions explained in these types of movies. Usually, the viruses and diseases are said to reanimate the dead, not regenerate which is a totally separate function. And more to the point, running after people doesn't really make them zombies, they're just rabid cannibalistic psychopaths rather than the undead coming back to life to feast on human flesh, which is a far more terrifying attribute. Honestly, character development is such an overrated concept for me that all I really need is a name to a face and I'm good. When someone steps on screen for the first time, have someone call out their name in an introduction and I'm fine with that, anything more really just gets in the way of the film as a whole. I don't care about acting, I care about action. |

Well the zombies here were rotting corpses that just happened to be able to move quickly (it would've been nice if they'd glossed over that with a quick explanation so it'd make sense, but whatever). They're not like the 28 Days Later crowd which were still alive and able to starve to death without food. I'm *sort of* with you when it comes to the characters. I just wish we'd had a bit more time with characters like Norma, Tucker, and Monica who were pretty entertaining but sort of got shafted when it came to what they did. Oh well. At least Norma got that kickass gunfight scene. |

I guess it's more the fact that I want my zombies to shuffle aimlessly like the old-school ones do. When you run, you're not a zombie: you're just a raving psychotic cannibal. When you're a dead person who has come back to life you're a zombie. It's the qualities found in the human body that allow us to pronounce you as "dead" which puts that word into play. |

Finally noticed something that had me scratching my head. When they throw the toilet through the window, how the hell did Ana get through without stepping in glass? Look closely like ten seconds later when the five are in the food court and you'll see that she's still barefoot. Did she piggy back on Luda or something?
