A nurse, a policeman, a young married couple, a salesman, and other survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing aggressive, flesh-eating zombies, take refuge in a mega Midwestern shopping mall.

I don't know what you're talking about. I've never noticed that scene before.

"Dawn of the Dead inhabits the same territory as last year's 28 Days Later."

Holy shit. If that didn't date the review, I don't know what does.

It's funny to see how James Gunn was best-known at the time for writing the Scooby-Doo movie as opposed to Slither, Super, or Guardians of the Galaxy.

Lol yeah. The fact that he went from Scooby-Doo to Dawn of the Dead makes me giggle.

I expected to hate this film when I first heard it was being made, but when they aired the first ten minutes on TV the week before its release, I was impressed. When I saw it opening weekend, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. But IMO it's a remake in name and the most basic of plot elements only -- specifically, the fact that it takes place in a mall. But for me the similarities end there. I don't think it comes anywhere close to the original, which was a legitimate achievement in horror cinema -- but on its own merits, as a straight action/horror flick, I like it and think it's above average.

I actually love this film more than the original. It doesn't have the same type of social context (the whole consumerism makes us capitalist zombie swine stuff), but I think this is still a very contextual, deep film. All of these people from different walks of life who all would never give a shit about each other in reality are thrown together and basically forced to... Live with each other, and stick together in a world where nothing else matters but survival and trying to hold on to the one last bit of humanity left.

I secretly with that Terry and Nicole's relationship had been a gay dude one, though... But that's just because I want to see Kevin Zegers do gay stuff. <3

I wouldn't want to do away with Nichole. 12 guys, 6 women (including a baby and a bloated woman who was played by a man) = way too big of an imbalance. Plus, if you want to see gay Kevin there's always Transamerica. And maybe other things he's been in, lol.

It's a secret wish. I'm still glad we got Nicole. I just am curious what would've happened if it had been like Terry and Nicolai instead. ;)

You know what I'd like to see? Seth Rogen's character in Observe and Report thrown into Dawn of the Dead. That movie, and that character, were already really fucked-up as it is.

I dug the trailer, though.

I'd like to see Seth Rogen eaten by a zombie in a Dead film. Can't stand that over-rated burn-out. Although, admittedly, I actually did kind of like him in Observe and Report.

Great zombie film, and definitely a movie that can be rewatched over and over and not lose its replay value. I've always hoped for a sequel, though I know it will never happen.

^ They really should've waited two or three extra years for the massive fail that was the Day Of The Dead "remake." I'm still holding out hope that SOMEDAY we will get a remake of Day Of The Dead that is as great as Night of The Living Dead (1990) and this film.

I feel like such a bad fan btw. I missed this film's 'birthday!' Thirteen years old as of March 10th.

The 23 minute interview with Jake Weber is really great. I got a laugh from him describing everyone rubbing baby oil all over themselves on the set to make their muscles look bigger and how he despised guns at the beginning of the shoot but eventually grew fond of them. (lol)

I love this remake for being something different especially with the way the zombies work. My favorite human character was Michael for trying to keep things together with the group and his romance with Ana.

Given 28 Days Later, I wouldn't call the zombies in this all that original, but I agree with what you're saying in general. What I love most about this film is that it's a remake that tried to do something very different, with a new set of characters and a style all its own, and mostly succeeded at it. I may still prefer the original film, but the fact that this isn't a carbon-copy of it means that I can far more easily appreciate it on its own merits instead of constantly comparing it to its predecessor.
