A masked killer, wearing World War II U.S. Army fatigues, stalks a small New Jersey town bent on reliving a 35-year-old double murder by focusing on a group of college kids holding an annual Spring Dance.

I wished Zito did more slasher films in the 80s. He pretty much disappeared.

Does anyone else like the part where the killer is suiting up? I love how its intertwined with Pam getting ready for the dance.

That was a great bit Plat- I also love it.

@Barry same here. His films always had a grest balance of being dark and nasty yet fun and enjoyable.

Yessss. Zito is king
Did he ever direct any other Horrors other than this and The Final Chapter? I wish he'd make a comeback if he hadn't, but chances are that won't happen. I really liked this one, but I agree about it having some pacing issues but as Platinum said, many slashers have that same problem, so I forgive it. The deaths here are pretty brutal but I'm not sure if I would call it Savini's very best. Hard to tell though. I'm surprised this hasn't been remade.

Pretty good slasher, but disappointing ending.

This is one of my favorite 80's slashers but I haven't seen it in about three years which is rather sad. I ADORE the kills though and the mask is awesome. <3

I got this DVD through Netflix a while back and I started watching it while my husband was at work (he worked nights then) but turned it off after the first kill because I was so creeped out. I ended up watching it after I got off work the next day with him sleeping beside me and I was still terrified and completely on edge throughout the movie.

Sure, it doesn't have a high body count but it had atmosphere, great music and great gore during the deaths we did get. I can't even describe the sense of overwhelming dread I had throughout the movie and I was so glad that I hadn't watched it alone--I don't think I would have slept a wink that night if I had!

The reveal was kind of weak but the ending more than made up for it. I give this one an 8/10.

I'm surprised this doesn't have a fullblown special edition yet.

It honestly didn't affect me. I feel like it's a difference in taste, and it's clear we have different ones but that's what makes us human.

I mean, it's not a movie-ruining issue. It's just a peeve of mine; slashers cramming two thirds of their kills into the first half hour and then the rest of the movie becoming somewhat slow paced. But hey, at least this one didn't turn into a dumb police drama like a lot of slashers that ditch the kills before the halfway mark. (suicide)

Saw this for the first time the other night, and I had this conversation with you already and I agree whole-heartedly. I think My Bloody Valentine did a better job spreading things out, all while maintaining a decent plot throughout.

What this movie beats MBV on though is the brutality of its kills. They looked incredibly painful/terrible ways to die. Kudos to the SFX department (it was Savini, I think?) It does drag after the whole chunk of murder in the beginning though, which ultimately drags the film down.

I too have this one on regular dvd and bluray. Very underrated slasher film. Kills were good and brutal but I just don't get why they showed the nerd from the 80's tv show RIP Tide in the basement getting it on with a girl and nothing happened to them.

I don't get all the love for this one. Granted the slasher FX are top-notch (it's Savini, of course they are) and the kill scenes are well-executed (no pun intended), but the acting is poor, the story is almost non-existent and there's no real mystery as to whom the killer is. There are only two characters in the movie old enough to have been in WWII, and one of them is in a friggin' wheelchair. You'd have to have a single-digit IQ to NOT know who the killer is the instant he appears on-screen!

But I guess it's better than Maniac. At least this one doesn't make you feel like the floor of a peep show booth after you watch it.

It would have been more interesting if there was an actual story here, but the movie is what it is and isn't what it isn't. They definitely could have utilized more WWII stuff in the flick. Backstory and such. Everything about that local police department sucked, by the way. Especially the Deputy Sheriff. The final girl was likable enough, but she didn't really do anything until nearly the last second. The pacing was off, but that could have been because of the early discovery of the prowler being out there. Overall, I would only recommend seeing this for Tom Savini's work. Other than that, two thumbs down. Okay. Maybe one thumbs down and another undecided.
