![]() There's a big valentine-party planned in the little coal mining town of Valentine Bluffs, Nova Scotia. It is the first Valentine's Day party in 20 years, because then there was an accident in the mine, and the accident happened because the men responsible for the security was at the party. The sole surviving miner, named Harry Warden, later killed them, and told the town NEVER to arrange a Valentine's Day party again. The party begins, and so does the killing... You should buy the Unrated DVD, Alan! Its worth it. Chances are it's not too expensive too since I got mine for like...$7.50 a while back.

Watched this the other night and it still holds up well despite some really corny moments (that junkyard scene, urgh). The uncut version is fantastic. I really don't like how the musical score completely drowned out everything else going on in Patty's death scene though. The uncut version of that scene is still really effective though. I just wish I could hear it all though. And I'm not sure if I've mentioned this but the "this CAN'T be happening AGAIN" scene early in the film STILL makes me feel like facepalming. As much as I appreciate the acting here (better than a lot of 80s slashers, at least) that part is just...bad, lol. I still love this movie to death though! |

You get the option of either watching the cut version or watching it with the deleted scenes reinserted. Not sure why though. Who would want to watch the cut version when you have the other option? This actually reminds me that back in 2009 I was living in Brisbane - and there was a Horror festival Be Afraid at the Gallery of Modern Art. Was just after the release of the uncut dvd and they were supposed to play it. So a few mates and I, went along (one of my mates actually did a short introduction) all pumped. Imagine how pissed off we were when we realised the projectionist actually played the wrong side of the disc and presented the cut version. So we left and headed to the pub down the road that had been our meeting place during the whole festival. |

^ What he said. ![]() And to be exact, it's roughly 2 minutes and 30 seconds longer. With the cut scenes you can tell they're there because the quality gets a tad shaky and there's more grains and 'pops' in the film but it's nothing terrible AT ALL and it's not even too distracting - especially if it's been years since you've seen the movie in any way. |

The only parts that really rub me the wrong way = the junkyard scene with the harmonicas and some bad dialogue and that cheesy sappy romantic scene, lol. Everything else is pretty much great. |

I didn't even notice that was from a screening in PA. It's on the opposite side of the state as me, but I would've definitely went if it was closer. |

This is one of the best of the 80s-era slashers. Among the better qualities is the watchable first half that has a lot to like, which starts off quite well with the initial town back-story on the holiday as the accident and eventual slaughter afterward go hand-in-hand with all the decorations and set-up done for the celebration in the present time. That creates an impending aura of chills and suspense in this when the few localized murders take place and the gag of the heart-shaped boxes are left behind at the crime scenes furthers this really nicely to create that full-on sense of dread here. That the second half tends to really ramp up the suspense factor from this early set-up enables a near non-stop amount of tense and thrilling stalking scenes throughout the party upstairs and the mine-tunnels below, as both manage absolutely fantastic scenes that follow a pretty simple pattern. The party tends to rely on quick shock scenes including the hot-dog water and the body in the freezer whereas the protracted stalking underground really amps up the suspense for some utterly masterful scenes. The chase through the falling suits, the extended chase through the tunnels and plenty of encounters throughout provide this with scores of scenes that take effective use of the genuinely creepy setting of the mine to load this up with great scenes in this section. These suspenseful scenes are augmented by the fine action throughout here with all the chasing, encounters and a thrilling pickax battle that reads a lot like a sword-fight, a marvelously designed and wholly chilling killer and plenty of gruesome deaths to really round out the film's positives. About the only thing here that doesn't work is the tedious love-triangle storyline that runs through the first half of this. These scenes are just bland and really grind the movie to a halt instead of really letting the intended drama that's festering beneath the surface come out naturally. Beyond this issue, there's a whole lot to like here that doesn't mean much. |

I'm SURE I've mentioned this before (too lazy to reread any posts other than GL84's, lol) but I LOVE the The Poseidon Adventure 'homage.' Please don't tell me the scene with them climbing up the chute with Howard's body hanging and falling wasn't an homage to that. I want to keep thinking it was. Glad you like this so much GL. The last thirty minutes alone is enough to make me consider it a top tier 80s slashers (and probably one of the top fifty or so slashers ever made). |

Indeed, this one holds up incredibly well and is a lot better than most give it credit for. |

Got the chance to catch it on Netflix a few weeks back. Great atmosphere with the mine and the killer reveal is one of the greatest stoic expressions i have ever seen. Only character i didn't like was Patty who got too whiny when the shit was going down and practically had to be dragged by Sarah everywhere they went to evade the killer. |

I wish Patty hadn't went into 'crying helpless girl' mode but it was realistic, I guess. She's still my favorite (at least of the secondary characters). |

have seen few times now but I seen the remake more, this is one of few times I actually liked the remake better, Yes, the remake was my first 3D movie. This wasn't bad at all, it dose seem to be a little outdated then others movies form the same time. I thought the movie was really well paced, it was not boring at and the movie didn't drag, there were decent moment of death and they not to far apart. The deaths i didn't seem to find gory but I think most of death were the same and some were off screen. I kind of knew who the killer was in this movie, to many clues and I found it really silly, why is was the killer, it's didn't really make sense, The acting was decent for slasher movie 6 out of 10 |
