![]() There's a big valentine-party planned in the little coal mining town of Valentine Bluffs, Nova Scotia. It is the first Valentine's Day party in 20 years, because then there was an accident in the mine, and the accident happened because the men responsible for the security was at the party. The sole surviving miner, named Harry Warden, later killed them, and told the town NEVER to arrange a Valentine's Day party again. The party begins, and so does the killing... Halfway through this. I still love this movie, but I swear...the dialogue and some of the acting is more and more painful with every rewatch.

Then do what I do and ignore acting quality all together. You'll find yourself enjoying stuff a lot more that way.

Unrated makes a huge difference here, the added gore helps a bunch with the kills. Aside from that, the final girl is great and I loved the atmosphere and the mine setting. So yeah, kinda loved this Though TJ is a pretty unlikeable hero, which is a bit of a problem. What a douche Edited by Repo, Jun 12 2016, 08:20 PM.

I like this movie. I have no problems with the acting. The only thing I noticed more this second time around is the actors' Canadian accents, but that's not a problem at all for me. I really do like this flick. I should say I love it. The uncut version, any way. That pick-axe through the eye? That shower head? Man. Gruesome. This should have easily been a franchise, IMO.

It's not a bad slasher by any means. I wouldn't consider it among the best, but it's certainly a hair or two above average, and the killer is a sight more cruel than your usual slasher movie villain. The Ballad of Harry Warden is an unintentional howler, though. Still amuses me like mad that they actually wrote a folk ballad about a killer coal miner.

R.I.P. actor Alf Humphreys (1953-2018) http://www.joblo.com/horror-movies/news/r-i-p-my-bloody-valentine-s-alf-humphreys-has-passed-away-133 He's been in so many bit parts, even in blockbuster movies, but to me he will always be the goofball Howard. |

This movie is underrated! As you can see in my list of favourites, this is one of my top films. We watch it every year on Valentine's Day lol, it's kind of a tradition. It was filmed in Sydney Mines, it's really beautiful there. I'm Canadian and didn't notice anything about the accents but I guess I wouldn't, right? I'm sure when people from, say, the southern U.S hear other people from the southern U.S talk, they don't notice anything different about it, it's just how people talk where they're from. I watched the remake with the guy from Supernatural and wasn't impressed. I mean, it was okay, but not nearly as good as the original. Edited by whippedhoney, Apr 5 2018, 04:21 AM.

The thing about the accents is that they're not just Canadian, they're Atlantic Canadian, the film having been shot and set in Nova Scotia. I remember having to turn on subtitles to understand what the characters were saying. That said, the accents definitely helped sell the authenticity of even the shakier performances, putting me in that working-class mining town. It was the same thing with Mulberry Street; you could tell that most of the cast were amateurs, but you could just as easily tell that they were all basically playing themselves, and so they felt like actual, blue-collar New Yorkers. |

The movie was filmed in Sydney Mines, but the actors were pretty much all from elsewhere in Canada; there was even one American among the cast, the one who played Sylvia (poor Sylvia, who was impaled on a shower head when she just wanted to get impaled with something else). I find that with Canadian horror movies, they're either really good or really terrible; there doesn't seem to be much in between. |
