![]() Dennis Allan is a scientist who visits Haiti on the strength of a rumour of a drug which renders the recipient totally paralyzed but conscious. The drug's effects often fool doctors, who declare the victims dead. Could this be the origin of the "zombie" legend? Alan embarks on a surprising and often surreal investigation of the turbulent social chaos that is Haiti during the revolution which ousted hated dictator "Baby Doc" Duvalier. Often a pawn in a greater game, Alan must decide what is science, what is superstition, and what is the unknown in a anarchistic society where police corruption and witch-doctory are commonplace. Whenever I see promos for this, I always want to see it. It looks gritty and dark, but I can never find it when I actually go looking for it. |

Just watched this. It was way better than I thought it would be and I heard it was pretty good. I've actually had this on VHS for like a decade but never had a VCR and I just recently threw it away because I'm cleaning my apt out because I'm about to move. The storyline itself was pretty good... but it was the unique nature of everything creepy in being related to voodoo, and I doubt there are a lot of voodoo flicks out there. It made for a really interesting atmosphere and different aspect of horror since it's well, voodoo. I like magic anyway. The acting was pretty good. Pullman did fine but I don't think it was anything exception but he certainly didn't take away from anything either. All of the support was decent and the main antagonist was fucking awesome. He looked evil, he acted evil and he was powerful. It's a little different to have basically a malign sorcerer as the antagonist, who also wielded significant political power in a country of unrest and corruption. For the time, '88 I felt most of the effects were good. They were mostly practical and most of them looked pretty good, there was only a few CGIish things that were bad... but it's 1988 and they were hardly used at all. Ending was pretty good too, there was some hoke to it... but it's fucking magic. Bout all I can complain about it's could get to it's slower part but overall it's totally worth watching. |

I thought this was pretty good too but not amazing by any means. I should probably rewatch it sometime though, since I honestly don't remember much even though its only been a year or so since I watched it. I remember appreciating the atmosphere and loving the setting in general though. I can't really remember if any of the characters did it for me, but probably not. |

The only one I really liked was the antagonist. The other two shamans that helped out Bill Pullman's character were cool but the bad guy stole the show. |

I'd recommend it. It's not perfect... nothing is, but I was really happy with most of it. |
