The plot depicts the breakdown of society following the accidental release of a highly contagious "rage" virus and focuses upon the struggle of four survivors to cope with the destruction of the life they once knew

So the first time i saw this film, I was a bit disappointed because I'd heard of all this hype leading up to it and for me, it failed to deliver. But then I sat and thought for a while about the film and then rewatched it, alone this time. Yep. It fucking got me. YIKES. For some reason it didn't hit the first time. It was like taking ten shots and saying "Oh I'm fine" and then taking ten more and then BAM, landing on your ass. That was me with this, pretty much lol. It definitely impressed me more the second time around. Everything about it was fantastic. I just wish we'd had one or two female characters :P 8.5/10

I'll definitely pass on the Blu-ray then, my DVD is perfectly fine. It'd be cool if the Blu-Ray had a 'choose the ending' feature that allowed viewers to watch the movie with one of the alternate endings instead of the theatrical. Just a thought. :P
That would have been really good, bit like the region 2 of Final Destination 3 where the films stops at certain points and you have to select a path and the film goes down that path.

Oh, we have that here in the states (Region 1) too. "Choose Their Fate" feature right? :P Loved it, I wish more films would do that sort of thing.

Yeah that's the one, it was a pretty good gimmick, it would be great if they did that with cut and deleted scenes on other films.

I never really liked Selena with her survive at all costs attitude that quickly falls to the side when she and Jim hook up. Mark should've lived a little longer at least since he was friendly.

Watch this (and the sequel) Dan! (goo) They're pretty awesome.

Still hoping we'll someday get a third film.

Watched this for the first time yesterday. I can really see why it was so praised back then. Great movie. (goo) I'd still prefer the second one as they stepped it up. I read somewhere they're in the talks with making 28 Months later...

There isn’t a whole lot here that actually works.one of the film’s few bright spots here is the action-packed encounters with the creatures, which is usually a lot of fun with some nice brutal action throughout here. Among the better attacks is the opening in the lab where the infected chimps get loose and attack the freedom-fighters freeing them as the hysteria and chaos works nicely whilst the chimps go crazy in the middle of the room, while the other big scenes include the first encounter in the deserted city streets where his confusion after just waking up and seeing them comes off as a great chase scene before he gets saved and the brawling done in the different locations in their journey. Likewise, the scenes at the end in the compound is all sorts of fun where the infected soldiers are loosened on the others resulting in some utterly fun and exciting moments here with the ravenous beings running loose in the complex while the raging thunderstorm carries on outside leaving this with a strong, violent and action-packed series of scenes. Along with the fine gore and make-up effects, it’s about all this one has as there’s quite a bit of stuff featured here that’s not all that enjoyable. One of the biggest issues here is that even though we get off to a rousing start, we don't get anything afterwards for quite a while which leaves a long gap between action. This cuts into the films pace, as we get a great last half with an okay beginning, but that middle part is what really drags. There is way too much exploration of the city and talking amongst the people to really get into the film. We don't need four discussions about the same event at different times, which gets rather boring at times to sit through some of that as there is way too much redundant talking in the movie that throws the pace off. Even worse, there is that dreaded quick-cut style of editing in the film that renders so much of the film barely able to figure out. This style of filming scenes is completely aggravating and doesn't make the scene look good. All we get is a sense of what is going on, as we’re just guessing because the editing and camera movements are so erratic and in the end all it does is make the audience confused as to make is actually happening. The other flaw here is the film’s tendency to really come up short on logical explanations for everything, leaving the origins or purpose of the contagion a mystery and having the release of it occurring as rather forgone afterthoughts. The soldier's purpose as well makes no sense, and on the whole this leaves far more questions than answers and really lowering this one as a whole.
Do illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup?

Some people are like slinkies: not good for anything, but you can't help but laugh when one falls down the stairs.

It's not a bad flick by any stretch, but it made me laugh how all the critics hailed it as original and innovative. From a technical standpoint, sure -- along with Session 9, it was one of the first major theatrical films to be shot on what was essentially hi-def home vide -- but from a storytelling standpoint it borrows (or, more accurately, blatantly steals) most of its plot points from Romero's original Dead trilogy. The entire middle section is a rip on Dawn of the Dead (the shopping spree in the grocery store, having to kill a kid while stopping to refuel, etc) and the stuff with the military is a swipe from Day of the Dead (evil military officer and his band of sexist asshole soldiers, a pet infected on a chain who later gets loose and kills the officer, etc).

Another gripe is how everyone called them zombies. They're not zombies. Zombies are reanimated corpses which feed on human flesh. In this flick, these are living, breathing human beings infected with a virus that turns them into mindless, feral maniacs.

All that said, I did still like it, though mostly for the performances, not the patchwork storytelling. This was my first time seeing Cillian Murphy, and he impressed me with the humanity he brought to his performance (although this untrained, skinny little dude taking out a squad of soldiers with his bare hands was a rather major stretch). And I really liked the great English character actor Brendan Gleeson as the dad, and how Jim took to him as something akin to a surrogate son. And the first time seeing those blazing infected chasing Jim through the streets was genuinely thrilling.

A good flick, worth checking out, but in no way is it the genre milestone a lot of critics and fans made it out to be.

I wonder if the film would have been as great and successful if they had gone with un-shot, only-storyboarded ending that the DVD has a small storyboard commentary about.

Spoiler: click to toggle

I'm honestly glad they didn't go with that ending. It would just be a random ending, and wouldn't have any of the emotional punch that the third act of the final film has. I don't like the idea of them never going to the military base, as that's where the film's true beauty lies, in my opinion.

Puppy, just because there's no evidence she killed her aunt doesn't make her dating material.

I remember the director's commentary for the alternate endings, and when he got to that part, he just stopped and said "what the fuck?"
