Horror Quote Of The Moment

Welcome to Under The Morgue.

We have sections for each decade of film, from the 1910s onward, as well as sections for 10+ major franchises, close to 50 'smaller' franchises (containing five entries or less), creative writing, independent filmmaking, photography, music, Non-Horror films and TV shows, forum games, and boredom busters, and to top it all off there's an IM shoutbox at the bottom of the page for random chat. From the tame and 'kid sister friendly' to the psychological and mindbending to cheesy splatter flicks to hardcore torture-oriented horror, there's something here for everyone, so why not dive in?

What are some original classics that to this day still beat the hell out of the remakes that are based upon them?

Shrug... Just about every film is better than it's remake.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Fog
Friday The 13th
One Missed Call
A Nightmare On Elm Street

The Halloween remake is equal to the original but for different reasons. It had that awesome 'prequel bit' (the first half of the film) but the last hour felt rushed, but I've already mentioned how that doesn't REALLY bother me. :P The remake entertains me more, the original is higher quality and probably much more frightening for its time.

Well, Thing (the film) I know is? clearly not a remake. But John Carpenter's Thing kicked butt. Kurt Russell was just a plus.

I heard the original Grudge (Japanese) version films were more scary. Haven't really seen them but I heard they were.

This is a hard list for me to narrow down. I wouldn't say the original is always better, but there are so many bad remakes out there that I could go on forever with this.

I think we can ALL agree with this.

True though for a PG 13 slasher it was the best it could be.

Most foreign originals are better than their American remakes

ANOES ('84)
Halloween ('78)
Friday the 13th ('80)
TCM ('74)
Psycho ('60)
Rear Window ('54)
Night of the Living Dead ('68)
Dawn of the Living Dead ('78)
Day of the Dead ('85) -- although, to be fair, I haven't seen the remake (but I'm guessing I don't need to having read all your guys' thoughts on it ^_^ )
Ghostbusters ('84)
Carrie ('76)
Poltergeist ('82)
The Crazies ('73)
The Fog ('80)
The Evil Dead ('81)
The Haunting ('63)
Sisters ('73)
Village of the Damned ('60)

Yes to all of those. A few more (sorry if I'm repeating any already said)...

I Spit On Your Grave
Last House on the Left
Ringu
Black Christmas
April Fool's Day
Prom Night
The Town That Dreaded Sundown
The Hitcher
Carnival of Souls
The Wolf Man
The Crazies
Let the Right One In
The Amityville Horror
The Omen
Night of the Demons
Fright Night
The Wicker Man
Nattevagten (Nightwatch)
The Stepfather
House of Wax
Psycho
The Grudge
The House on Sorority Row

Hm. I'm sure there are some I'm just not thinking of at the moment. Way too many remakes to remember them all off-hand.

If I do have to narrow it down, I guess I'll do it with films where the original just far-and-away blows the remake out of the water. Not a situation like Dawn of the Dead, Fright Night, Carrie, or even The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, where the original is a classic but the remake is still pretty good. I'm talking a good-to-great original film, and a terrible remake. With that restriction in place...
  • Black Christmas
  • The Mummy (Boris Karloff or Brendan Fraser, either one destroys the Tom Cruise version)
  • Day of the Dead
  • The Fog
  • Prom Night
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street
