Horror Quote Of The Moment

Welcome to Under The Morgue.

We have sections for each decade of film, from the 1910s onward, as well as sections for 10+ major franchises, close to 50 'smaller' franchises (containing five entries or less), creative writing, independent filmmaking, photography, music, Non-Horror films and TV shows, forum games, and boredom busters, and to top it all off there's an IM shoutbox at the bottom of the page for random chat. From the tame and 'kid sister friendly' to the psychological and mindbending to cheesy splatter flicks to hardcore torture-oriented horror, there's something here for everyone, so why not dive in?

What are some sequels that managed to beat the very first film that started their series?

A few sequels I find better, IMO:

Phantasm II
Aliens
Predator 2
Friday The 13th Parts 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7
A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 and New Nightmare
Saw II
Evil Dead II and Army Of Darkness
Puppet Master 2, 3 and 4
Maniac Cop 2 and 3
Hatchet II
Poltergeist II: The Other Side
Return Of The Living Dead Part II
ChromeSkull: Laid To Rest 2
The Devil's Rejects
The Collection

A few of my picks will be controversial I'm sure, like Predator 2, ROTLD2 and Poltergeist II. Not to disrespect the originals as I love those too, just found the second ones more enjoyable.

A Nightmare On Elm Street 4 - my personal favorite part in the series
Final Destination 2
Aliens - not better but on the same level
House 2 and 4 - I think parts 1, 2 and 4 are equally awesome
Jeepers Creepers 2
Sleepaway Camp 2 & 3
Hatchet 3
Saw 2

Several of mine:

Friday the 13th Parts 4, 7 and Jason X.
Carnosaur 2
Phantasm 2
Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky
Halloween 4 and 6
Underworld: Evolution
Paranormal Activity 2 (damning with faint praise, but it's still better)

I'll stop here for now, I'll be here all day doing this.

It hasn't been mentioned yet, but I thought ABC's of Death 2 was a big improvement over the original.

^ Agreed. I only really disliked a couple segments. The first had quite a few bad ones. The second never reached the highs of the first but it never reached the lows either.

Hayride 2
Bunnyman Massacre

^ Agreed, most definitely. There were about 3 good ones and 23 duds in the first one, whereas it was the other way around in the second one.

GhostWatcher II

(Maybe) The Last Exorcism Part II. It's better in SOME ways.

Sleepaway Camp 2

Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid

Rob Zombie's Halloween II

Halloween II

Exorcist III

Wrong Turn 2: Dead End

When a Stranger Calls Back

Purge: Anarchy - as much as I loved the first, showing a larger perspective of the event work better.

Saw II - not necessarily better because the end twist of the first was so shocking, but definitely on a par.

Insidious Chapter 2 - I found the Bride in Black villain more complex, and more interesting, than the Red-Faced Demon.

I think Saw II & Saw III are better than the first Saw

Other sequels that surpass their predecessor(s):
Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones
Rob Zombie's H2 (when you're comparing it to his remake only and not the rest of the series)
Friday the 13th Part 2 & Part 6
Bride of Frankenstein

Agreed on the first two. The Purge: Anarchy definitely benefited from the increased scope, allowing it to fully utilize the possibilities of its premise rather than squander them on a rote home invasion flick. And I actually preferred the twist in Saw II to that of the first. With Insidious Chapter 2, though, I thought the Bride in Black's backstory to be fairly cliched.

And I'll second everyone who recommended The Devil's Rejects. I found it to be a superior film to House of 1,000 Corpses in pretty much every way.
