I have this on DVD - it's brilliant. I had the giggles when the archeologist got the hysterics while the Mummy walked out of the room.

Christopher Lee is brilliant in this, as is Peter Cushing. |

Finally watched it last night (yay for TCM!) and really enjoyed it. =U This reminded me why I like the (few) Hammer films I've seen. The opening credits with the hieroglyphics were cool. Yay for there being a doomsayer in this ("He who robs the graves o Egypt...dies!") and of course, no one listened to him. The look of Anankha's (beware of me misspelling her name repeatedly) tomb. Reading from scrolls and reviving mummies is a big no-no, Stephen! *hits with newspaper* "Relics, officer. Egyptian relics...nothing more... "Mehemet Spoiler: click to toggle I loved the nasty, dirty look of the mummy (I was worried it'd be squeaky clean in perfect white wraps), especially when he rose out of the water. Mummy attacking Spoiler: click to toggle was soo mean! When It broke in I was mildly creeped out. I'd freak out if I saw that shit outside of my window. The Egyptian costumes were a mixture of hokey and well done. The backstory was pretty cool but the flashbacks and things went on a wee bit too long. So why didn't Mehemet just Spoiler: click to toggle ![]() Khari got it BAD! I wish the mummy did more than just Spoiler: click to toggle but oh well. The arrow stab was awesome though! Isobel Spoiler: click to toggle was a bit too much of a coincidence for my liking. But again; oh well. UH OH DAT MUMMY WANTS YO WOMAN! OoOoOh.Sorry. Had to. Anyway.... ![]() "They wouldn't know an Egyptian from a Chinese acrobat! " I like the 'Is it right or wrong to open tombs?' "commentary" this had. The big dialogue scene between John and Mehemet was somewhat intense. I love how the Mummy was Spoiler: click to toggle Overall, this was surprisingly good. Not a masterpiece of anything, but a lot of fun and moved pretty quickly. ![]() 6.5/10 quality, 7.5/10 entertainment |

This is one of the better entries in the genre with a lot to like. One of its better features is that there's a lot of screen-time given to the mummy itself which prompts a lot of good parts along the way. Besides the fact that we get to really feel for it's dangerous actions as well as the spectacular make-up for the being, there's some really well-done action scenes that are rather enjoyable. The initial attack at the nursing home, as the mummy breaks into the room of one of his victims who has seen him coming and is desperately trying to get away only for a savage assault before the inevitable happens, the back-story fill-on flashback on the father where we see the creature coming to life in grand fashion as well as the first assault in the study where it sneaks up on the victim who's completely unaware of it's existence and then starts a vicious brawl before being distracted by the wife each provide this with rather enjoyable moments that keep this going along nicely. The nursing home sequence gives it a sense of ruthlessness, there's a great nod to the history of the culture by showing what really happened on the trip and the several attacks in the study not only give this a pretty rousing series of attacks but also display the kind of emotion and heart which is required for these kinds of stories as, despite being caked in layers of muddy bandages, his frame and body language combine into one perfect image. As well, the extended and prolonged mummification flashback here is simply marvelous, far more detailed in here than in the original version as well as a little more bearable in that it has new ideas in it that helps separate this one as being not just another remake and gives this a different identity. As well, the set design is perhaps the best part of the film, as is the case with so many of the mummy films simply because of what has to be done to the set to make it believable. You would have to create artifacts, sculptures, tools, paintings, and other sort of details in the tomb, and what's seen here in the detail and design as being the most striking part of the film. While this one does tend to revert too often to the clichés of the franchise and never really does anything too original in that regard, far too much here overcomes that. |

Do illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup? Some people are like slinkies: not good for anything, but you can't help but laugh when one falls down the stairs. My review blog: http://donshorrormovieblog.blogspot.com/ | |

I remember first seeing this as a kid. My dad's friend recorded a VHS for me, along with TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA, FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN and most of DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE. I watched this again last night. Basically just Universal's THE MUMMY'S HAND and THE MUMMY'S TOMB combined into one, but still a decent film. Universal should have made their new MUMMY reboot more like this one. I'd like to see Kharis return to the series. |
