A legend in the history of B-movie fare. How many female scientists travel the Amazon bedecked in bikini-wear calculated to charm an anaconda off a branch? That's what happens when Julie Adams and fellow scientist Richard Carlson happen upon the black lagoon and the amphibious creature inhabiting it. Casting a gimlet eye on Adams in backstroke, it's love at first sight for the scaly beast.

The Creature From The Black Lagoon was the absolute best and most original American monster costume of the 1950's. I believe it was one of the Westmore's who worked on it, as I know Bud Westmore did loads of makeup for Universal studios. I enjoyed this one as much as I did the two sequels, "Revenge Of The Creature" and "The Creature From The Black Lagoon". The Creature was the kick in the ass Universal needed to get the monster craze back on track after our old buddies Frankie, Drac and the Wolfman were getting long in the tooth. In any case, The Creature rules the roost.

My local theater is doing a 3D screening of this on Halloween. I'm so excited.

Oh my gosh. The 3D was fantastic and the underwater cinematography was gorgeous. One of the best theater experiences I've ever had.

Just watched this last night for the first time and I really like this flick. Yeah, there are flaws. It is a B-Movie. The lead actress could have gotten a better part. Some of the characters act out of character, for a lack of a better term. The creature could have been shown less to add more suspense, a la Jaws and Alien. Overall, though, I was quite pleased I bought the DVD of it. Those underwater sequences are really amazing. Especially for that time. Wish I could see it in its original 3-D. On a big screen, no less. I couldn't help thinking though that this needs a remake. Preferably by Guillermo del Toro. I think the most recent bit of news is that Universal wants Scarlett Johansson for their Black Lagoon remake. Still no director even though there have been countless ones attached to the project throughout the years. Including del Toro. Great creature design.

The opening monologue was nice. They picked really good locations for this, the music was better than the music in a lot of Horror films I've seen from the 40s and 50s, and I liked that the core group was a bit average in size (though I feel that this desperately needed at least one more female character). I liked Kay a lot though so I can't complain much. Mark was hot. Lucas should've been a lot funnier than he was. I was impressed by the look of the creature. It did look a bit goofy in some shots though (like when it was peering up from the water with its eyes looking all derpy). That thing made some scary ass noises though! This definitely had some pacing issues but I was not bored. The "surprise bat" at the end was cute<3. I kind of want to see this in 3D. This could've used one or two more deaths. Still, I liked it.

5.5/10 quality, 6/10 entertainment.

I reguarly flip-flop on what I would name as my favorite Universal monster flick -- Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, or this flick. Suffice to say I love it like butter, love the hell out of the Gill Man design and those underwater scenes still hold up well over sixty years later.

When I was 14 my then-stepdad took us to Silver Springs in Florida, where we got to go on a glass bottom boat ride and see the locations where they filmed the underwater bits to this flick. I was in geek heaven.

That's pretty awesome. I'll have to find out where Silver Springs is but chances are it's nowhere near the Panhandle where I live. I definitely agree about the underwater scenes. I like that they're just as good in the other films as well.

Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and the Creature are probably my three favorites as well (though I still love Dracula and I have a soft spot for the Wolfman even though he's more depressing than anything). I can't even remember if I've seen the older Mummy films so I can't really say anything about those until I go through all of them in a couple of weeks.

We went to Silver Springs while visiting my stepdad's parents, who lived in Ocala. I remember it not being very far away from there, if that gives you an idea. And don't quote me on this, it's been thirty years, but I seem to remember it not being more than a ten or fifteen minute drive between them.

What's there to say really? Creature from the Black Lagoon is a milestone and a classic for a reason. Gillman is one of the best designed movie monsters of all time.
