Lance Preston and the crew of "Grave Encounters", a ghost-hunting reality television show, are shooting an episode inside the abandoned Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital, where unexplained phenomena have been reported for years. All in the name of good television, they voluntarily lock themselves inside the building for the night and begin a paranormal investigation, capturing everything on camera. They quickly realize that the building is more than just haunted - it is alive - and it has no intention of ever letting them leave. They find themselves lost in a labyrinth maze of endless hallways and corridors, terrorized by the ghosts of the former patients. They soon begin to question their own sanity, slipping deeper and deeper into the depths of madness, ultimately discovering the truth behind the hospital's dark past...and taping what turns out to be their final episode.

Rewatching it, it was still a good movie but none of the jump scares made me jump anymore. Still entertaining though.

Overall this one was an absolutely enjoyable effort which has a lot of great things going for it and not too much holding it down. One of the better features is the purpose of the reality-show back-story as the basis for the haunting here by incorporating the found-footage aspect into a solid, workable format that still work in a film like this. It displays a frantic energy to the film's numerous and outstanding jump scares with its never-ending scenes of banging doors in the distance, cries echoing throughout the abandoned corridors, malfunctioning equipment and many other utterly creepy tactics since this one has the demons and creatures interact on camera. This one even goes for some impressive ideas for the ghostly haunting as in the hair-pulling, the screwing with the radios as well as the single most creepy and chilling part of the film in the way they toy with the structure and lay-out of the facility where exits lead further into the building or are completely screwing with expectations. Also worthwhile are the great scenes throughout here from the demons and ghosts who are the highlight offerings in the film, as their appearance is just utterly creepy with the black, hollowed-out eyes, gray pupils and distorted mouths create a truly creepy look here, and the guttural howling screams in their scenes are truly frightening. Add into that their behavior of having them pop up unexpectedly out-of-nowhere or come strolling into frame, giving them a reason to be feared and helping this along nicely with creepy creatures doing creepy things in the creepy setting. Mix together with some outstanding atmosphere and it's an enormously satisfying entry that makes up more than enough to hold the one lone flaw here with this one having an overly complex plot that doesn't have to be. This one easily could've been about the ghosts staying in the sanitarium tormenting the group, but it throws in the rather overblown nonsense about the doctor and his methods with the patients that just seem unneeded here. This tends to pad out the last section more than actually power through into a frantic finish, but still this doesn't harm this one all that much.
Do illiterate people get the full effect of alphabet soup?

Some people are like slinkies: not good for anything, but you can't help but laugh when one falls down the stairs.

I just saw this movie for the first time Friday night. I actually quite enjoyed it. The story was surprisingly fun, not too serious and the film had some good creepy atmosphere. The idea of the asylum changing constantly reminded me of one of my favourite novels, Mark Danielewski's House of Leaves. The scares themselves are rather ineffective, mostly shocks scare that fall short of truly being shocking, though one or two were well done if not a bit obvious (the bath scene for example). The characters, though somewhat clichéd are rather enjoyable, perhaps not so much in spite of the fact, but rather because of it. Really what it comes down to is that this movie is a fun lampooning of all those ghost hunter reality shows with insufferable twats and whiny prats as hosts, with an added dose of creepy atmosphere and great setting.

I enjoy everytime I watch this movie. I laugh when they paid that hispanic guy $20 just to say he saw a ghost.

I remember the main guy (Lance?) actually being kinda likeable and that, in general, this at least didn't feature characters whining and bickering 24/7. I also like that the ghost hunters were actully fake and trying to get ratings (since most of them IRL are and either want ratings/want to scam you), even though they didn't do that much with the concept. But... Yeah. This was overall pretty meh. Still too slow with not all that much happening like most FF movies.

Puppy, just because there's no evidence she killed her aunt doesn't make her dating material.
