Nuclear explosions force the residents of a New York apartment block to run from the building. However, the explosions force them into a basement. Eight residents are holed up in the building's bomb shelter. They must acclimatise to each other in difficult, cramped conditions.

About the only criticism I can think of with this film is that it does play up the conflict aspect a bit too hard. While I firmly believe that humans are bastards, we're bastards that generally prefer to survive instead of dicking each other over (barring very unusual circumstances beyond simply "we have to survive") and while there's at least some effort made to imply that the characters are growing more emotionally deadened to everything and to set up the eventual Lord of the Flies situation (being made to chop up the corpse, the general mistrust, etc) this film becomes a bit less believable the more I think it over.

Though I'm just rambling at this point. The film isn't really about realism so much as building a mood and atmosphere of unease and paranoia, and it does that quite well.

This movie seriously deserves a higher rating on IMDB. It's one of my favorite films and the hate is just confusing. It has some plot-holes but it's a fantastic film. :/

Yeah. I think it's definitely a good film and I was a little surprised to see the fairly low reviews.

I hope in a few years people will open their eyes and see how underrated and good this movie is. It doesn't deserve all the low reviews.

I have this movie, but was hesitant to watch it first, didn't know why but when I finally decided to...I'm not disappointed. Really great! Love the characters, the story, the disturbing scenes, paranoia and especially the survival aspect of it.

Great movie, though It's not something I really care to watch again. It's a downer but I still like it.

I'll probably show it to a friend most definitely. But it's not something I care to watch alone.

Yeah I've only watched it once alone. Every other time, I showed it to people (Robby, mom, Adrian, Zack). I'll probably show it to Tabitha and Kristle next time I see them but yeah...its not a fun watch, ESPECIALLY if you're alone and unable to talk to anyone about it afterward so I totally get where you're coming from lol.

Love this movie. Very bleak and depressing and doesn't hold back any punches.

This movie is so depressing it makes Anne Frank: The Whole Story look like Carebears.

This film was a laugh riot for the whole family. So sweet and uplifting. It was like the film Mr. Rogers never made.

Nah. For real. I'll post my review for this film sometime tomorrow.

Nah, before I write my review, which will most likely be lengthy, emotional, and filled with deep anger and sadness, I want to take the time to say thank you, Jonathan. Thank you for making me watch such a horrifically bleak, unflinchingly cruel film. It makes me realize... Damn, my life may be hard and annoying at times, but at least I'm not the character of Marilyn.

^ Yes. (shock) I still to this day feel nothing short of "Ouch that fucking STINGS" whenever I think of this movie and Marilyn. I honestly can't remember more than a handful of films where I saw someone broken down as much as that poor woman was - and I've seen over 800 films for the first time since this. Rosanna seriously gave one of her best performances (that I've seen anyway) in this.

I loved seeing her in The L Word too though. (coffee) "That kind of love doesn't exist" breaks my heart, lol.

Jesus. Every conversation with you goes back to The L Word somehow... XD

But I agree completely. I honestly didn't care for her character at first. It was like, oh she's the mommy character whose only storyline will be the protective mommy lioness who stop at nothing to protect her daughter...

And then the writers just kept fucking her over and over and over and over again. I don't think I've ever seen a character end up as chewed up, spit out, and broken as her character was by the end of the movie.

Ugh. I know I should save this for my big review, but on the subject of Marilyn,
Spoiler: click to toggle

It's funny... I can sit through wildly violent films like High Tension, Martyrs, A Serbian Film, etc... But moments like that, that are so simple, subtle, and not even remotely graphic make me feel dread and sadness in such a way that those wildly violent films can't even begin to do.

Agreed completely. I mentioned that scene on the phone earlier. It never fails to fuck with me a bit since she was both helpless and willing to let herself go down like that at the same time. It's really depressing.
