Nuclear explosions force the residents of a New York apartment block to run from the building. However, the explosions force them into a basement. Eight residents are holed up in the building's bomb shelter. They must acclimatise to each other in difficult, cramped conditions. Edited by MonkeyParadise, Feb 5 2014, 12:20 AM.

Well, I mean... Marilyn was a complex character. Sometimes it seems she enjoys what all is happening to her, but five minutes later, it's torture and cruelty to her. |

I've always chalked that up to her being traumatized, unable to cope, unsure of who to turn to, and in a weird state where she understands that what's happening to her is wrong but at the same time she is drawn to it because it is SOME sort of attention devoted to her. It's pretty complicated and twisted which is why she's pretty much my favorite character. Her 'story' was easily the most horrifying and real of them all for me. |

What is there to say about The Divide that hasn't already been said about my face? Kidding. No, really... I do not know where to start with this review because I still have no idea how I feel about this movie. A part of me thinks it's one of the most brilliant reality-horror films I have ever seen, and another part of me wishes it had never, ever been made. It was an ugly film. In every sense of the word. It made me feel sick to my stomach; it made me wish it would end; it made me say "what the fuck" at least three thousand times; it made me want to crawl into a ball and just sleep for three days. These are not good things. These are not good emotions, but I can't help but praise the film for being able to make me feel so many things in a two-hour time span. The things I hate most about this ugly, horrific film (of which there are many) are actually its biggest strengths. With the exception of Adrien, who is probably the least-developed character in the movie save for the little girl, none of the characters end up remaining truly good people. Every person is shown to have a truly dark, ugly side, Spoiler: click to toggle This pisses me off, as it gives me very few people to root for in such a situation, but I can't help but wonder if that was quite possibly the most realistic decision the writers could make when writing the script.I also hated the fact that we didn't get much information at all about who the scientists were, and how exactly the war came about... But after thinking on it, I realized this was ALSO a brilliant decision, as the viewers' confusion over what the hell is going on and WHY it's going on mirrors the confusion of the characters in the bunker. While it would annoy me in most films, not having really ANYTHING spelled out for us with this film adds to the reality of it. I hated the way certain characters were treated. I hated the fact that Marilyn spiraled the way she did, that she became nothing more than a child-like, empty shell of a woman who is so far broken beyond repair by the end of the movie. Spoiler: click to toggle Marilyn is quite possibly one of the most tragic characters I've ever seen in a horror film, and Rosanna Arquette gave not only the best performance in the movie, but probably the best performance of her entire career.I hated that the characters who were originally developed as good-hearted, kind human beings, Spoiler: click to toggle end up being the most evil characters in the entire film. No one in this movie, with the possible exception of Adrien, was to be trusted. I hated this, but once again, I applaud the writers for going there.Lastly, I hated the fact that every character, including Eva and the can-do-no-wrong-pretty-boy Adrien, made absolutely ridiculous and stupid decisions throughout. I hated the fact that half the time the characters make me go "what the FUCK are you doing!" Once again, though, the things I hate most about the film are its biggest strengths, and the fact that the film can elicit such emotion from me is the biggest compliment I can ever give. Once again, this is an incredibly ugly film. Ugly is really the only word for it. I can't say that I liked it, as I do not LIKE feeling sick to my stomach with anger, dread, and discomfort for two hours straight, but I CAN say that I deeply, deeply admired Xavier Gens' effort as a director, as well as all of the central performances in the film. What do I rate this film, you ask? I would love to say "no comment" because that's the exact feeling I had from this film... By the end, I had experienced so many emotions, that I was left feeling numb by the time Spoiler: click to toggle This is one of the harshest films I've ever seen, so giving it a score is damn near impossible... But here we go. Grade: A- I can't give it a low score because of the ability it had to bring so much anger out of me, but I also can't give it a perfect score for that very same reason. I did not enjoy this film, and I likely would never, ever show it to someone else unless I hated them and wanted them to suffer. Edited by Neurotic Chainsaw, May 6 2015, 09:52 PM.

I absolutely agree with every word of what you just wrote. It's the sort of film that left me speechless after I saw it, and it truly was a very draining experience. It was an excellent (if flawed) movie, but one that I have absolutely no desire to watch again. |

^ Thanks! Yeah, I'll probably end up watching it again someday because I like to punish myself (lol), but I think it's one of those films that I have to take a very long break away from before watching again. By the way, speaking of how depressing and fucked this movie is... Has Lauren German EVER made a happy movie? It seems she always stars in depressing horror films... I mean, she played one of the bullies in A Walk to Remember, but even THAT movie ended in tragedy... Edit: She has made at least ONE comedy film, called Love and Mary... I'm so used to seeing her in these dark, angry, depressing movies that I don't know how easy it will be for me to see her as the lead in a romantic comedy. (Unless it's a romantic comedy that ends with someone getting brutally murdered) Edited by Neurotic Chainsaw, May 6 2015, 10:20 PM.

I totally agree with you for the most part, though I don't see any of the depressing, miserable things as actual flaws (though you don't seem to either, I guess). I'm definitely glad that it was made, I'm VERY glad that it was ugly (it was pretty much a more rape filled The Day After-esque film). Pretty much the only thing I'm not glad about is that I went into this without much warning whatsoever so I ended up watching it with my boyfriend and it wrecked our moods (and chances of 'doing anything') all night. *And yes, I'm aware that I've said that here before*I really wonder what the movie would've been like if Marilyn's daughter had remained in the film. Actually, I kind of don't WANT to wonder that. Chances are the mother-and-daughter, Adrien, Sam, Eva, and MAYBE Mickey would've been able to overcome Josh and Bobby easier.I'm glad they didn't explain how the war (if it even was a war and not just a full scale terrorist attack, which is what I kind of assumed it was) started and who the scientists were. I always assume that they were just experimenting on survivors of the blast to see the effects of radiation, how fast it'd kill them, etc. Eva's decision at the end was the best way to go, I think. It showed that she no longer trusted anyone since Spoiler: click to toggle |

I agree with you. None of the things I hated were flaws at all. The fact that I hated all of that about the movie is actually a positive thing, as I'm pretty sure anger, hatred, and negative emotions were exactly the type of feelings the film was designed to elicit. I am glad that the little girl left when she did... It was a ballsy choice alone to not make the little girl the typical "don't worry. you're a little girl in a horror film. You're gonna be fiiiiine" stock character, but at the same time, I am really glad she wasn't around when shit got sour... I can't imagine the horrible things that would've happened had she been around for the last 2/3s of the film... |

I don't think she would've been subjected to the Marilyn treatment but she probably would've been ultra traumatized. Well, I mean... Adrien was the only character who it was actually easy to root for other than Eva. I felt bad for the likes of Sam and Marilyn, but neither of them really fought to survive... By the end, Sam was a hot mess, and Marilyn was just a broken shell. Yeah. Had she stayed, they either would've given her a ridiculously ballsy death scene that would've made the film even harder to take, or else it would end probably with a cheesy Eva and Adrien escape with her and they venture off into the unknown type of ending... So glad that wasn't the ending of this film. |

Or they would go all girl power randomly and have the three females be the only survivors! ![]() LOL@you calling Sam a hot mess. Probably the most accurate description of him in the second half of the film. And I'll never get over what happened to poor Marilyn, ever.

I'm really glad they didn't turn it into a girl power movie. I'm all for girl power horror films, but the biggest thing I loved about The Divide is, with the exception of Eva, I had absolutely no idea who would be a bigger character than who, as most of them had relatively the same amount of development throughout. And, yes... Poor little Marilyn. As I said, next time I'm feeling down and out, I'm just going to remind myself "hey, at least I'm not Marilyn!" |

Agreed. Eva was pretty much the obvious lead but aside from her - and even then, I kept expecting her to be killed once it got down to the final 4/5 because of how extreme, random, and fucked up this was - I really wasn't sure who would die, who would live, and when the marked-for-death characters were going to go. The death order was pretty surprising to say the least. ![]() And yeah. Marilyn's character is a good reminder that whatever you are going through...it could always be worse, haha. |

Funny thing about Eva, though... As brilliant as Lauren German was in the role, the conversation we had about if Ashley Bell had played the role instead makes me wish I could see a version of the film in which Ashley plays her... That would've been so damn ferosch-balls. Yeah. Even if you ARE Marilyn... It could always be worse... Because that's exactly what happened. Every scene with Marilyn just got worse and worse and worse and then she has a period and gets made fun of and then it gets worse and worse and worse again. Spoiler: click to toggle

Ashley would've been great as Eva! I'm still happy that Lauren played her but I almost want an alternate film where Ashley starred as Eva just to see how she would've been. And you just HAD to mention the period scene!

I think Ashley is honestly a better, more well-rounded and versatile actress than Lauren, but Lauren almost always picks better movies for herself... If Ashley could have the film choices of Lauren, she'd be fucking unstoppable, man. Sorry. If it makes you feel better, I would've been nice to her and helped her out... |
