I keep seeing reviews for this. I'm pretty excited. I wasn't actively hunting for news, but I keep hearing about new cast members that I like. |

Having watched it, I'm even more horrified that they wanted to add opening and closing monologs. The climax already has more than enough exposition. I can't imagine what the monologs would have added. I absolutely adored this. It might be my favorite film that was released this year. The whole movie was really intense. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Have you ever felt so tense while watching a movie that you felt the urge to get up and do a couple laps around the room? The biggest fight scene had me wanting to hop up the entire time. (I am also a pacer, so this might not be a thing that universally happens to people.) The score is ridiculously good. The cast was amazing. Tilda Swinton was completely unrecognizable. Chris Evans was also really fantastic. There's a few moments of somewhat dodgy CGI, but the film is gorgeous overall. Song Kang-Ho really grounds the movie, especially towards the end. As good as the story is, it isn't a film that is particularly interested in world building, so an awful lot of things go unexplained. The tone was so over-the-top that I did not mind at all. There are a few cheesy lines, but it wasn't anything that distracted me too much. It does have a bit of a South Korean sensibility, which can be a little off-putting when Chris Evans is running around. I would definitely try to keep that in mind, because it does have some of that gruesome deadpan humor and quirkiness that doesn't normally show up in American films, especially not big action blockbusters. It's currently on Netflix. It was definitely intended to be watched with blasting sound, so you might want to be prepared. There's a few lines that are pretty incompressible unless you have it cranked up. I'm already planning out when I'm going to watch it again. |

Thank GOD this is as good as I was hoping it would be, going by your review! :D I'm definitely going to watch it with Robby soon though I may wait until I get the DVD since a laptop screen probably won't do it justice. Is the version on Netflix and DVD cut down or did they decide not to shave off a giant chunk of the film after all? |

They didn't end up making changes. Since the director spoke out about what Harvey Weinstein wanted to do, he retaliated by sending it to a smaller branch of the company and doing a smaller release. |

This already got the rewatching within a week treatment, and I wasn't even showing it to anyone. It was just me and my grandma's dog. I got interrupted by a big coughing fit, but I definitely want to give it another try tomorrow. It's one of those films that has a lot of things that take on a new meaning after you know all of the ending reveals, so I was really enjoying noting those. |

About 35 minutes in. Really not sure how this is a horror film or a foreign film for that matter, and I cant say I'm loving it. Atleast not yet. I'll watch anything with Chris Evans in it though

It has American actors, but it's mostly a South Korean production. It got the "Oh, well, it's close enough and was covered by all the horror websites" pass when it came time to get it out of the Upcoming Horror section. |

So, I finished the whole movie. I actually ended up liking it a lot. I guess the first 30 minutes or so, I just didn't quite understand what the hell they were going for with this LOL. Octavia Spencer's character was probably my favorite. I like how at times it felt like some sort of brutal kung fu flick, and I also loved how Spoiler: click to toggle I cant say I loved it as much as Vanessa did, but I'm glad I watched it. |

There are so many things that show that, if this had been released on a huge scale in the U.S. it would've had an impact and really resonated with audiences. From the fact that the main focus was class warfare to the guards (the train's cops, pretty much) holding the 'steerage' passengers in their place to the 'poor' children being used to Spoiler: click to toggle to the rich people being as strung out and fucked up as the poor (but it was seen as okay since they had the money and glamour to back it up) - there were a lot of pretty relevant things that made me think of some of the past and present issues in America, which is part of why I thought this was so damn amazing. There's a lot of stuff, intentional or not, lurking under the surface of everything going on. In some ways this felt like a harsher, more twisted V For Vendetta with bits of The Golden Compass (the classroom scene made me think of that right away for some reason), The Book Of Eli, The Divide, Soylent Green (thanks to the protein bars that were made of...stuff, lol), various Horror films and various disaster films (thanks to the overall concept and the pretty epic conclusion). In other words - awesome shit. The performances and characters here were mostly amazing. It was nice seeing so many big names in a film like this that is big budget and high concept but not exactly what I'd call 'mainstream.' The casting sort of felt like Contagion - another big budget film that didn't FEEL like a typical mainstream starpowered film by any means. Curtis was a pretty great leader and I appreciated that they made him flawed (what he revealed toward the end was pretty fucking chilling but still didn't make me hate him or anything). Namgoong was pretty hilarious at times but was also a well handled, serious character who kept things moving and was a lot more intelligent than he let on. Same goes for his daughter who seemed to be played for laughs (asking for "Krono?!" every five minutes and getting drunk randomly) at first but ended up becoming a favorite of mine. I really loved Tonya who was far from being a typical 'mom on a mission to save her kid character' and was totally realistic. Thank God they didn't go super over the top with her. She's probably my favorite good guy of the film even though she didn't have AS much to do as I expected. Mason was a weird, evil, quirky bitch. Imagine Pettigrew and Professor Umbridge having a baby and voila, you get Mason. I loved her and hated her at the same time and she was incredibly sneaky. And what was up with the dentures or whatever?! ![]() Edgar was really cute and likeable. Now I remember why I had such a big crush on Jamie Bell for a while. Andrew was incredibly sympathetic and I couldn't believe that he was the same guy from Alien Vs Predator (he was a total weakling in that and he was a bit frail here as well but at least he had more of a reason here, haha). John Hurt did a pretty terrific job as Gilliam and I felt pretty stung when Spoiler: click to toggle Grey was super fucking hot. Like...damn. I really wish his character had a *little* more development but I was still rooting for him. Wilford was a pretty terrific villain and I liked that the Spoiler: click to toggle It added a bit more emotion and even more intensity to it all. The teacher was...really creepy. The singalong scene was disturbing and Spoiler: click to toggle The woman in yellow was ALSO pretty creepy with her obsession with measuring things (thankfully there was a reason for it though I still would've been fine if it'd just been an odd quirky thing). She almost seemed robotic at times which was pretty cool. When it came to the deaths, it wasn't overly gory but the bodycount was ridiculously high and there was plenty of bloodshed. It didn't get AS graphic and visually disturbing as I expected but I'm still not disappointed since Spoiler: click to toggle In a way, this can be compared to the likes of The Divide. Where that film showed just how horrible humans can get in a dire situation, this showed that humans are capable of becoming better even after sinking to some pretty depraved depths. I loved that. This was definitely one of the very best of 2014 and I'm really glad I watched it alongside The Guest, which made for the best double-feature I've had lately. I'm already wanting to rewatch both films.8+/10 quality, 9/10 entertainment. |

I love that Tilda Swinton played this character and a sexy one in Only Lovers Left Alive in the same year. She had this whole complicated backstory for her character that is pretty cool, which included the dentures.
I liked this, too. I think it's interesting that the South Korean part of the cast also has similar name recognition. |

I showed this to my friend Sarah last night and she was reacting strongly the entire time (in a good way). She was SO pissed off when Spoiler: click to toggle were all killed in just a few minutes. There were a few characters (such as that "pregnant bitch with the scary eyes" and "the So It Is bitch") that she totally hated. She picked up on some of the gay subtext as well which was cool and kept remarking that "this movie is SO Korean - I love it" because of the film's style. Jamie Bell and Chris Evans and Luke Pasqualiano

I enjoyed this flick as well. Felt it completely lived up to the reviews. I feel for Chris Evans, that most of his non-MCU flicks lately have been tanking so badly, so I was happy to see this film receive some amount of success. Dude's a good actor, he deserves more character work. And of course Tilda Swinton -- you have to admire that broad's bravery. Too many actresses are afraid to allow themselves to look, or be made up to look, as abjectly ugly as Swinton was in this flick (as well as a few others). |
