![]() It was the perfect family vacation for composer John Russell and his family when a freak automobile accident claims the lives of his wife and daughter. Consumed by grief, John, at the request of friends, rents an old turn of the century house. Mammoth in size, the house seems all the room that John needs to write music and reflect. He does not realize that he is not alone in the house. He shares it with the spirit of a murdered child who has homed in on John's despair and uses him to uncover decades of silence and deceit. With the help of Claire Norman, the one who aided John in procuring the house, they race to find the answers and soon learn that a devious and very powerful man guards them. |

Thank you so much for making a thread for this, this is a true gem. It has wonderful acting, a great story, and some truly creepy moments. I'd recommend it to any horror fan, even if you aren't into paranormal flicks. |

I guess me and Andy are the only ones who have seen this? I'm kind of surprised since it was one of the best haunting movies I've seen in a while.George C. Scott was great here. I felt really bad for his character's loss and he really sold the grieving aspect of this well without it ever feeling forced. He was a better 'detective type' of character than many ACTUAL detective characters are in Horror films. I really liked Claire too and the fact that Claire's actress was George C. Scott's wife in real life really benefitted the film and added an extra layer of sweetness to the leads' bond. I liked that Melvyn Douglas was the exact age as the character he was playing (79) at the time this was made. Little things like that tend to make things feel more authentic (he did NOT look 79 though so when watching this, I figured they got an actor in their early 60s to play Carmichael, haha). Joseph Carmichael was a really interesting character and while I didn't agree with his behavior 100% I understood that he wasn't a villain - that he was just in denial and probably having a lot of difficulty coming to terms with the fact that Spoiler: click to toggle It was nice that this had flashbacks that were handled in a really surreal way. They blended well with what was happening in the present day and were never distracting. The story itself was excellent. I would love to read a novelization of this since the complex nature of the backstories, the family history, the house, etc. would be really good fleshed out even more on paper. I appreciated that this film really took its time with the exposition without ever really dragging. It's nearly two hours long and it's not exactly the most action packed Horror film of 1980 (DUH) but I was never bored. ![]() Some parts were also really creepy. I wouldn't exactly say it's a SCARY film but it's definitely creepy and overall, it's one of the better films of 1980 and I will definitely be seeing it again<3. 6.5-7/10 quality, 8/10 entertainment. |

The Changeling is a Canadian haunting flick, and one of the few. In some ways I’d liken it more to a Victorian Gothic in a modern setting than a horror movie in execution, often more unsettling than outright terrifying, and little if any gore, yet in themes it is definitely horror. There is very little for special effects, at least until the end, instead the movie goes for a more subtle approach, building atmosphere, and developing characters and plot. It is well-paced and acted with eerie atmosphere and a top notch finale. The Changleing checks off all the right boxes that no modern shock-filled horror fare can match. As always, a very enjoyable viewing. |

A very good film with a surprisingly sympathetic performance from the usually gruff George C. Scott. This flick's all about mood, atmosphere and imagery and delivers on all counts. It was released at a time when violence and splatter were all the rage in horror films and was as a result unfairly overlooked, but it's very much worth checking out. I don't know anyone who's watched this movie for the first time and been disappointed. |
