When hundreds of videotapes showing torture, murder and dismemberment are found in an abandoned house, they reveal a serial killer's decade-long reign of terror and become the most disturbing collection of evidence homicide detectives have ever seen.

I was so pumped to see this when the trailers came out, but I never got around to seeing it. Is it on Netflix or anything?

Well, okay. I get that found footage probably shouldn't all be in HD (well actually nowadays it should because of the camera quality). That said, the Poughkeepsie Tapes was released in 2007 (supposed to be filmed in the 90's) and the quality was sooo bad I just couldn't take it. That's honestly what turned me off from it. If my old Samsung flipphone could take 420p video at the time, the dude in the movies didn't need to use an 80's camcorder. I get that it was "set in the 90's" and they did give it a home video feel that felt like watching "America's Funniest Home Videos" but I couldn't enjoy it. It was so hard to watch I turned it off. I will say I read about it after and wish I could get through it. I just couldn't take the quality.

Just thought - is it one of those 'based true events' movies?

As big of a fan of found footage as I am, and as much as people were highly rating this movie as being disturbing and hard to watch (for different reasons than DeadBodiesEverywhere's) I was extremely disappointed and, for once with a FF movie, bored. I rarely feel this way about even the worst of movies, but I ended up feeling I was trapped inside a barrel too, as watching the extended shots of the same thing, with only sobbing as a sound effect (and seriously, there was one particular part that, if it wasn't, it sure felt like 10-15 minutes of looking at a barrel) felt like staring at a wall. Again I apologise, I never slate the weakest stuff, but this movie was blown way out of proportion. I enjoyed Amber Alert more than this one.

I had to turn it off, but not because of the quality. The "my name is slave" part with the girl hogtied just got to me too much. That was some time ago though, so I may give it another shot.

The concept is really great, but there is just so much wrong with the execution. I have never felt the urge to murder someone and film it, but I think I would invest in a slightly better camera first. If you're going to go to all that effort and risk, wouldn't you want the quality to be decent? I'd think the killer would want to actually be able to see what he's doing. I wish the script was a lot tighter. There are some aspects that are just so random that it completely torpedoes the illusion that this is a documentary.

Rewatched it earlier tonight and a couple parts ("Your name is slave" and the "if I were the big bad wolf, there's nothing you could do about it" and the freaky double-mask crawl bits) still got me. I showed mom the clip with the little girl and she was like;

Watched this tonight. It wasn't AS disturbing as its been made out to be, but a few parts were unnerving, like the woman in the back of the police car, and when he invited the girl scouts in. The masks were rather creepy as well.
