An uncut Region 1 DVD was released. This movie isn't too bad, but it might being boring to some. I tried to show it to a friend, but he didn't like it. It's actually kind of a messed up movie. From the people who made RE-ANIMATOR. |

So this wasn't the AMAZING movie that I expected it to be after hearing many people gush over it for so long but it was still really satisfying for the most part. The three leads did a great job of carrying this and because of how likeable they were and how quickly things moved along, I really didn't mind the fact that this had such a small cast (I still kept hoping one or two more people would end up at the house though). The effects in this were great for the most part but the weird monsters that kept flying around looked terrible and would occasionally take me out of it. The main villain/monster looked TERRIFIC though and the practical effects were solid so I forgive the one or two minutes of bad effects, I guess. Jeffrey Combs was SO adorable in this. I really want to rewatch the Reanimator films now since this got me in the mood to see more 80s/90s films with him<3. Crawford was really likeable, perfectly awkward, and I felt pretty bad for him the whole time. Bubba started off as just a comic relief side character but became one of my favorites. He was funny but not over-the-top or unrealistic and it helps that Ken Foree played him (perfect casting!) and it was so odd seeing Barbara Crampton in an older role (remember - it's been over 4 years since I had watched a film she starred in that was from the 80s/90s, other than Chopping Mall). I loved Katherine. She was definitely my favorite even if she wasn't the most developed/interesting. Dr. Bloch was an excellent bitch-character and really should've been a part of the film the whole time instead of just at the beginning and in the last half hour or so. I'm pretty sure that Bloch in Planet Terror/Death Proof was named after her, which is neat. Edward Pretorius was one freaky, evil, gross son of a bitch. He was a great villain and very intimidating. The story was pretty interesting as well but not AS complex as I was kind of hoping it'd be. The main location was also nice. I wish that we had gotten two or three more kills (and big characters) but that's a small complaint since, aside from some cheesy effects, I don't really have much to complain about when it comes to this. ![]() 6/10 quality, 7/10 entertainment. |

Granted it's not as good as the previous Gordon/Combs/Crampton flick Re-Animator, but it's still a load of fun. Like most film adaptations of Lovecraft's work, it requires a lot of new material be created to stretch it out to feature-length (most HPL stuff, while imaginative, is frustratingly short) and I think screenwriter Dennis Paoli (who also wrote Re-Animator) did a fine job bulking it up, and Combs and Crampton have always had wonderful on-screen chemistry. The only real complaints I have are that some of the sets are questionable (the finale, with Crampton lying on the ground with the house in the background, is obviously a forced perspective of a miniature house set) and the Pretorious creature FX are a tad hackneyed. But the performances are effective, the story moves along briskly and there's plenty of splat to keep genre fans appeased. I consider this one an under-appreciated gem more than anything. |
