Horror Quote Of The Moment

Welcome to Under The Morgue.

We have sections for each decade of film, from the 1910s onward, as well as sections for 10+ major franchises, close to 50 'smaller' franchises (containing five entries or less), creative writing, independent filmmaking, photography, music, Non-Horror films and TV shows, forum games, and boredom busters, and to top it all off there's an IM shoutbox at the bottom of the page for random chat. From the tame and 'kid sister friendly' to the psychological and mindbending to cheesy splatter flicks to hardcore torture-oriented horror, there's something here for everyone, so why not dive in?

An advertising executive is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his punishment, only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.

The original kicks ass. I hope Spike Lee doesn't ruin this or I'll be pissed.

This could go either way, but I don't know why they would remake this.

If you find it, give the original a watch. It's pretty brutal at times, but it's great. I hope Spike Lee can live up to this. I'm not sure why a remake exists, especially now with the original only turning 10 soon.

Dug the original a lot. I'm looking forward to the remake, despite all the flack it's been getting ever since it was announced . . . .

It isn't as good as the original. I'm actually not sure that I can say that it's good without the comparison. Josh Brolin is not a bad actor, but his performance is vastly inferior to Choi Min-shik's. I'm not entirely sure if the blame is with Brolin, the direction, or the script, but he's far too much of a steely action hero. I don't want to blame Brolin, because he is good enough in his less restrained moments.

None of the other characters are that great really. Elizabeth Olsen's character is similarly a bit too normal for the film. The villains are absolutely ridiculous. I might give Samuel L. Jackson a bit of a pass, but the main villain was terrible.

The script is pretty bad. It does too much explaining. I don't know if it was heavily edited, but the pace is off. Instead of being horrific, several scenes are outright cartoon-y.

There isn't really anything that isn't a disappointment. The fantastic opening is replaced with a pointlessly long one. The captivity scenes don't have the same amount of emotion. The hammer scene might be bloodier, but it doesn't have any of the wit and just comes across overly choreographed instead of purposefully funny. The ending is decent, but a massive letdown compared to the original.

So I'm wondering if the twist and ending is similar to the original?
