A young social outcast goes to great measures to find the perfect friend in this debut horror feature from director Lucky McKee. Set apart from her peers as a child due to her lazy eye, May's only friend and confidant was a delicate doll encased in glass. Though as a young adult May has learned to control her lazy eye with glasses and contacts, her introverted tendencies always seem to hinder her search for the perfect friend. Walking down the street one day, May happens across a young man tenderly caressing the damage of a wrecked car and falls in love with his seemingly perfect hands. As May and Adam (Jeremy Sisto) begin to spend more time together, the quirky couple seem to have much in common, and May believes that she might have finally happened across the perfect boy. Her deep-rooted psychological problems slowly surface, however, and Adam is gradually driven away, leaving the vulnerable May in the company of amorous co-worker Polly (Anna Faris).

Such a beautiful movie that deserves even more praise than it has. Angela Bettis deserved an award for her role.

This. I loved her here a lot more than in Carrie (though she did well there too).

Angela Bettis was horrible as Carrie. She is great as May though.

I liked Angela in Carrie. *shrugs* But no doubt she was better in this. She deserved an Oscar, seriously.

Her dress reminded me of Sally from nightmare before Christmas

The is one of my favorite horror films. I like the characters, and May is especially well written. I hope Lucky McKee eventually makes another film that is as good as this one. I like the whole cast, especially because they are all so sympathetic.

Agreed Vanessa! He's been involved with a few decent ones but nothing as good as this, sadly. And I like to just...ignore The Woods.

Beautiful movie full of great performances and a few big surprises. The deaths were simple but good and I felt SO bad for May! :( I just wish we'd gotten more time spent with some of the secondary victims and May's parents. Seeing more of her childhood and teenage years would have been a treat, forsure.
There was supposed to be more from her childhood, but it was cut. It hinted at the ending too heavily.

I got a huge crush on Jeremy Sisto after I watched it the first time.

Glad they cut it then. Sucks they didn't include any cut stuff on the DVD. We just got a commentary or two.

This is one of my favorite horror movies! When I describe it to people, I always describe it as "A female version of 'One Hour Photo' or 'Taxi Driver.'"
I have a friend who's a vet tech (what May is) and I always think about him when I see this movie.
Also, with regards to May trying to create the perfect friend, the ending reminds me of the ending of an old European horror film called "The House That Screamed." Only in that film May's character was a boy and just as disturbed, and his mother ran a girl's school.

Some Halloween I will be dressing up as May (boy version like I did with Carrie White in 2012 and Mary Mason in 2013). Not this Halloween though. I want to make my costume like May did and I don't have the time or supplies to do it this year. (coffee)
