![]() A young social outcast goes to great measures to find the perfect friend in this debut horror feature from director Lucky McKee. Set apart from her peers as a child due to her lazy eye, May's only friend and confidant was a delicate doll encased in glass. Though as a young adult May has learned to control her lazy eye with glasses and contacts, her introverted tendencies always seem to hinder her search for the perfect friend. Walking down the street one day, May happens across a young man tenderly caressing the damage of a wrecked car and falls in love with his seemingly perfect hands. As May and Adam (Jeremy Sisto) begin to spend more time together, the quirky couple seem to have much in common, and May believes that she might have finally happened across the perfect boy. Her deep-rooted psychological problems slowly surface, however, and Adam is gradually driven away, leaving the vulnerable May in the company of amorous co-worker Polly (Anna Faris). |

Other than Angela Bettis, I think something that makes this movie stand out is that Adam and Polly are able to be good people but also kind of be jerks. I like that I always still liked Adam and Polly. In a lot of the movies that I would compare this to, their equivalent characters are completely horrible. The Craft is the main one that comes to mind, and I think this is intended to be a bit of a subversion of those kinds of movies. |

Agreed! I like that they're not 100% bad, but also not 100% good either, of course. It makes it even more effective and conflicting when Spoiler: click to toggle I'm actually starting this now. It's been a while and figured now would be a perfect time to see it yet again. Love the opening credits with the sewing machine stuff. ![]() And I was totally shocked to find out some people I used to go to school with have actually seen (and really liked) this! |

From now on, this is probably going to be one of the last movies I watch in October. I had to stop myself from watching it again earlier today.

So is it bad that when I watched this tonight, me and my friend laughed at certain scenes?

Nope. I laugh at the awkward stuff pretty much every time I watch it now. The first few times, some of the stuff just made me uncomfortable. Now, a lot of it is really amusing to me - but I still feel really bad for May. |

Yeah, a lot of the scenes are cringeworthy hilarious... Racecars, spilling the soap, Oh Loopy, air freshener, melons, in the head, turn around Miss Grable, etc. This film is damn hilarious in certain parts. That's part of why I love it. It's horrifying, heartbreaking, and hilarious all at once. The three H's. |

^ Yup<3. I'm a sick fuck and I find myself laughing at the kids getting cut with glass too though. But that's okay since the makers laugh at it too in the commentary. Seeing Nichole Hiltz in Trailer Park Of Terror and Angela Bettis in the deleted scenes of Sinister made me want to watch this again<3 |

I finally gave this another go and liked it okay. Angela Bettis was fantastic as May, Jeremy Sisto and Anna Faris were great in their supporting roles, and I liked the quirks of the film but I like The Woman and All Cheerleaders Die more. I mean this is clearly Lucky McKee's most personal film and the one that so many people connect it and so I get why people love it so much.

Yeah. This film and Roman seem to be Lucky's more personal, as you put it. Roman doesn't quite get the attention it deserves, as people went in expect a film to spiral into a slasher like May did, whereas Roman is not nearly a horror film like May is. It's more of an artistic drama. A lot more experimental. I do hope we get another May in his repertoire. I KNOW we won't get another The Woman, as he specifically said in an interview that he doesn't want to go to the dark place he went to with The Woman, and that it's simply the "darkest he could ever go." The reason this film is so successful is simply because of her character. Nevermind the fact that she's nuts. Nevermind the fact that she kills. She's one of the most deeply sympathetic and relatable characters in any film. |

Such a great movie. I felt so sorry for May throughout. Even when she was at her most unstable/unhinged. Such a beautiful character piece. |

Just watched it again. Made sure to start October with it so I wouldn't possibly miss it this year. This still holds up incredibly well. I still love everything about it. As I got older it became more clear just how much of a cruddy person Adam was. He was basically preying on a clearly troubled, vulnerable, and sexually inexperienced woman and chances are that he would've ended up dropping her after getting in her pants even if she hadn't bitten him and acted "too weird." It can also be said that Polly is rather predatory as well. Also, it JUST clicked in my head that the mom saying "now it's ruined" at the beginning was her response to May tesring the wrapping paper lol. I know a lot of people who reuse wrapping paper from year to year for birthdays and Christmas so I don't get why it took so long for me to get that May's mom was probably one of those people too. |
