![]() Six girls are found dead in the apartment of a famed Russian psychic named Raymar living in the USA. His dead body is hauled away to be placed in a crypt in a mausoleum. His estranged daughter and husband (Adam West!) try to get to the bottom of what happened, but are stunned to discover that the psychic terrorized young girls, feeding through telekinesis off their fears. As part of a dare, a high school girl (Meg Tilly) is forced to spend the night in the mausoleum, unaware that Raymar will feed off her fear and rise from the dead. |

This movie was on a lot on HBO back in the day. It seriously freaked me out. When I finally got it a few years ago, I was completely shocked to learn it is rated PG-13. It's a slow build up, but it has incredible atmosphere, especially once the pledge is in the mausoleum. It's really a mood piece that doesn't have much in the way of gore. It was also co-written and directed by Tom McLaughlin who did "Jason Lives". Meg Tilly and Adam West are in the cast. |

I didn't think the PG-13 rating came around until 1987 or somewhere around that time? O_O Anyway, I LOVE the title, I might check this out. |

Turns out it was rated PG. Watched this right before watching Grotesque the other night and while this lacked the violence of that film, I think I actually liked this one more. The opening credits felt like they went on forever and the thunder/lightning got a bit annoying. The entire opening was just...sort of weird, with the random flashback and all. The stuff in the apartment was when it started getting decent though, with all of the bodies and stuff embedded in the walls. The funeral stuff was also somewhat creepy, but Wes Craven's New Nightmare, this was not. I really liked Meg Tilly here, though I still prefer her role in Psycho II. Julie was cute, sweet, etc. but seemed overly eager to please others while trying too hard to make herself out to be something other than 'just a good girl.' This totally lost me for a moment when 'psychic vampires' were mentioned, but it was made better when it moved on to the stuff in the mausoleum. Steve was hot as fuck, Carol was fuck as hell and became more of a bitch as the film went on (and I totally loved her for it, and she fits in well with other 80s 'bitch characters'), Kitty was a great little sidekick (what's up with the toothbrush though?). And what kind of an insult is 'nerdle brain?' Oh wait, forgot...this was PG. And to be honest, its a bit easy to forget that this was meant to be child friendly since it was occasionally nasty and just felt like a mostly dry R Rated movie (which there were plenty of in the 80s, sadly). The mausoleum itself was pretty creepy, I love that they gave Julie pills and shit, and all the scenes of Carol and Kitty sneaking around and scaring Julie were pretty funny. All throughout, it maintained a mostly creepy atmosphere, had a few really entertaining characters, never took itself too seriously, and it managed to be totally watchable even when the electric laser eyes (oh God!!) came into play. Unlike many films which turn into police dramas 2/3rds in, this knew exactly what it was and stuck with it, which I really appreciated. Tame as it was, it still delivered. 7/10 quality. 8/10 entertainment. |

OK wish I'd never done that, it is horrifically boring absolutely nothing happens in this film whatsoever. Its very 'Are you Afraid of the Dark' kids could have probably watched this after school on TV. |
