Four friends share a gruesome secret from 50 years ago. When events of the present make it seem that the past has come back to haunt them, they agree it's time to tell their "Ghost Story" and face their fears.

This was pretty boring. I really didn't enjoy it and almost fell asleep.

it sounds like those movies where they killed someone by accident and they try to forget about it.

Sorority row, IKWYDLS, etc..

I went to see this movie in the theaters back in 1981 when it was released. I like the movie and owned the VHS and dvd. I tried reading the novel from Peter Straub, but I could'nt get into it and it was hard to understand. Somebody told me once his horror novels is some what hard to understand. But I'm glad this movie is coming out on blu-ray next month.

This is a creepy one. Not very well-known, but I know of it because of my dad, who saw it when he was around fifteen in 1981, and it scared him a lot. It's not terrifying by today's measures, but it certainly deserves more praise and attention than it has gotten.

Plus, you know, Alice Krige.

Good flick. An old fashioned but state-of-the-art (in '81) ghost story with strong performances from Craig Wasson and Alice Krige, and some tasty FX work courtesy of Dick Smith. Krige displays a kind of ethereal beauty here, the cinematography is aces and the story, while it doesn't harbor any huge surprises, is well-written and involving. Notable mostly for the appearances of a number of classic actors (such as Fred Astaire and Douglas Fairbanks Jr.) but despite some copious nudity (of both the male and female variety), this is one of the more classy horror flicks of the early '80s. Fans of supernatural horror will likely dig it.

I don't think the nudity takes away from its classiness.

Maybe its CLASSIC-ness, but not it's classiness.

This was REALLY fucking good but not QUITE as good as some people had me expecting it'd be. I heard from some people over the last few years that this was absolutely terrifying which has me thinking that they first saw it when they were like five years old and it just makes them warm and fuzzy with nostalgia nowadays (not that there's anything super wrong with that). I didn't find it the least bit scary, jolting, or even really creepy (despite it's perfectly dark tone and some great imagery). That's not a strike against this though since I don't find very many films frightening. Like most Horror fans, I don't watch Horror to actually be scared. (lol)

So yeah, this isn't scary.
What it IS though is a very good ghost story (hence the title, duh) with a well developed plot, perfectly flawed characters (though these old men all appear to be wonderful and likable for the most part, the flashbacks tell a different story - I'll just say that I'd rather hang out with them when they were in their 60s/70s, no fucks given how hot they were when they were younger). Alice Krige can do no wrong it seems. That's three Horror films with her that I've seen that she did a GREAT job in! I like Melvyn Douglas, Craig Wasson, and Fred Astaire a lot too. They were good here. It was interesting that Craig played two different characters. I really don't know who, besides Alice, gave my favorite performance since everyone was good.

The film made good use of flashbacks (I liked Don's a lot but the four men's flashback was even better) and some scenes FELT really cold thanks to the colors, the camerawork, and just how bleak the damn thing looked at times. There's some one-by-one killings but most of them aren't particularly gruesome (watch out for that random penis shot though!) and this is definitely NOT a slasher film. It's not even as slashery as the likes of House By The Cemetery and Superstition (1982). It's just a good old fashioned ghost Horror film with a few deaths thrown in to kick it up a couple notches. And that's perfectly fine. (thumbsup)

7/10 quality, 7.5/10 entertainment.
